    Using a Phone

I want to start by saying that I very much love the work the OM crew is doing to make this front end. The teasers of the 1.0 skins are great and I'm chomping at the bit to upgrade when it is available.

I have some questions that may seem simple to carPC vets and I'm posting here because I'm not sure if the issue is OM specific or a general carPC thing...

...phone support in OM: how is this done? Do I just connect my phone via bluetooth? I was hoping to get a dedicated phone for my car and wanted to hardwire something in. Are there any phones that can integrate to OM via USB (calls, answering, etc) or am I way over-thinking something that good ol' 802.11 takes care of?

The other question I have is simply; Do I need to create my own skin to have OM optimized for the resolution of my screen, or is there a setting I'm missing in the current 0.8 version?

I think you need to be more specific about what your talking about, i have gathered that its an om system that came with your car, Which one?

Usually your phone would connect via bluetooth for making and answering calls.

    clarification

    by OM, I mean OpenMobile.

OpenMobile comes with a phone plugin. I see it has options to answer & dial, but I can't find any documentation on how a phone is integrated.

Is it just bluetooth, or is there a way to integrate my iPhone into OpenMobile?

oh i see the open mobile front end LOL, i highly doubt you will be able to integrate your iphone with a usb as this would need custom software made for it first and yes it is usually through bluetooth.

You want to connect it to your carpc via a usb cord, but this isnt neccessary with bluetooth, is there any particular reason you would need it to be connected via usb?

Though I've been told it's nothing to worry about, I have concerns over sound quality and such. Plus, connection through USB means I can save the need for a bluetooth adapter, freeing another USB port.

I'm very new to this CarPC thing. I've wanted one for years and I'm now in a position to make it happen.

Bluetooth adapters are relatively cheap and the sound quality should be fine for phone calls, however if your wanting to stream music you might get a stutter every now and then but all in all its worth it.
Also with a usb cord to your iphone you would be taking up that slot anyways, but with bluetooth you can use it to connect multiple devices.

OM has no official bluetooth plugin yet, it's only been developed on the concept stage as of now. But once released it will support all that you'd expect over bluetooth.
I have not tested a connection over USB but if you have the proper drivers it should work if the software used can talk via serial/usb instad of serial/bluetooth.

OM does have support for iPhone music playback. I have not tested this since I don't have an iPhone but I think it's up and running (at least in 0.9 version that's in development, I'm unsure if this was included in the 0.8 release).
    Failure is not an option...

If you are running Win7, try pairing the phone with your computer. When you double-click on the phone you should see a button to enable using the computer's audio I/O "as a headset or speakerphone for calls on your phone." You'd still need to start calls from the phone itself (no addressbook integration on the computer) but it's a start. If you have one-touch voice dialing, it should work... I just discovered this yesterday, haven't actually tried it yet.

Thanks for the heads up, Borte. And NSFW, I'll give that a try.
