You're Welcome! Thanks for noticing. Good to see some are still watching! We're kind of excited about the way OM is evolving.

This virtual zone business seems to be just what I'll need for my truck, awesome! And the bright side is, is that by the time I get on with my CarPc project, you guys will have been completed and done all initial testing!

Glad you checked us out. I'm thrilled myself.

Are you planning to start a project thread for your CarPC project (with pictures of course )?

    Agreed.

Been looking for a Linux FE this one looks like it will come out really nice.

I hope we don't disappoint! OM is designed for cross-platform. When the test version is released, it will be the Windows working one first. Then it gets put thru it's paces on Linux/Mac. The Devs can correct me here, but assuming no unusual "gotchas", those ones shouldn't be TOO far behind.

Now, aside from that: Just read thru your Pre-build thread. You have an interesting project ahead of you. While I agree with not putting too much car control in the hands of Windows, there is a chance that OM can handle much of what you want. Multi-zone along with CharacterLCD plugin, and (yet to be made) OBDII plugin may well give you the stuff you want. I agree with Soundman that you probably don't want your CarPC controlling things like unlocking the vehicle, especially if you're in a hurry!

There is a plugin in the works that allows the use of Arduino (think FusionBrain with less muscle) that you could interface some stuff with. I have added interior/exterior temperature sensors/readings (in a test scenario at the moment). My kudos to Heezer7 for working on the Matrix Orbital and Arduino plugins for me. Come to think of it, a standalone Arduino can likely handle the unlock thing + talk to the computer. You could even marry an Arduino to a remote keyless entry and talk to the computer, although the Arduino would have to wait for the computer to wake up.

I also think you will be fine with the M4 power supply. Ratings are "usually" shown as MAX, rarely does everything use the max. HiJack has LOTS of stuff running in his project and definitely needed the 550W supplies.

My dual-core at 3ghz and everything powered from my M2 draws just 1.5A from the car. The powered USB hubs and the two 7" displays are powered from the M2 also. This helps ensure clean power to the devices. You plan on a couple larger display so the more powerful M4 should work well for you.

Anyway, the guys here will gladly answer your questions on what you can and can't do with OM. There's not a lot you cannot do as long as someone is willing to write up a plugin for it.

    Cheers,
    John

The biggest problem I am having is finding a FE that will work with a MegaSquirt ECU (note: the MegaSquirt dose not use OBD II) and perhaps have a plugin that will allow me to switch/edit tunes from the FE. I am thinking about using a program called TunerStudio to interface with the MegaSquirt, and to run my gauge display.

As for the Matrix Orbital and Arduino, since my car has enormous blind-spots I am thinking about doing some kind of blind-spot sensors and a rear distance sensor.

I am not familiar with using MegaSquirt. But a quick read suggests that either a plugin could be made, or (more likely?) the plugin for creating embedded apps would do the trick. Basically it allows you to define the app you are using, and embedds it's window into OM.

Other specialty hardware (sensors) can be coded into a plugin. Usually the issue is the coder having access to the same hardware in order to code for it. From what I've seen on MP3Car forums (and actually from personal experience) is that if you can provide a developer with hardware, you will likely find they'll help code something up (time permitting of course, it's not their full-time job).

    Cheers,
    John

I would be very interested in helping to create a plugin to do what I need. The MegaSquirt is an "experimental" device, and as such is very open to pretty much anything. I will create a separate thread on the topic of creating a plugin later, after I see what happens with OM. I am not even close to ready to start playing with that phase of the project yet.
