    The Dream is Alive

Well, I think most would agree: itís been pretty quiet on the OpenMobile forum.

However, there has been activity in the background. A small group of us have been working to ďkeep the dream aliveĒ. And alive it is.

My name is John. I am an OM team member, although I am not a major OM developer. While I do play around with the code a bit, I am on the team mostly as a tester. Putting test builds through the wringer and discussing with developers what I find, and make a suggestion or two.

Unfortunately the founding member Justchat_1 has not been around. While it resulted in a slow down for a while, this had not stopped development. Keeping in mind that the developers do have regular lives and jobs, I found it amazing the amount of time they DID find to dedicate to this project and resurrect it from the proverbial ashes.

So the good news is - the pace has picked up a bit.

Some of what has been happening (very high level):
    • Speed tweaks
    • Expanded and improved debugging facility makes plugin development easier
    • Numerous improvements to make plug-in development easier
    • Numerous improvements to make skinning much easier
    • Updated input router
    • Added functionality to main menu to facilitate multi-zone
    • Fixed bugs in several base plugins
    • On-going testing

There are many finer points to that list. Most progress has been in making development easier (framework, plug-ins and skins) to allow things to move forward, and to make intended functionality a reality (such as multi-zone).

There has not been a lot of additional effort on existing plug-ins. The existing base plugins have been worked on. A couple new ones are being finalized. But in all honesty, plug-ins are a bit easier to build, but they rely on a good solid core framework, and that is where efforts have been most concentrated.

As a major tester, I can tell you that things are shaping up. I put OM through trials every day. Multi-zone is a reality but needs a couple more tweaks and fixes. Most of the base plug-ins are, for the most part, solid.

    More Good News
As a team, we have decided that, in the near future, we will share an un-official release, for testing only.

IF YOU WANT TO TEST: This post will be updated, and a zip file (for testing) with instructions will be added.

After we make the interim version available, we respectfully request that you limit comments to bugs and glitches. Things that make OM unusable or crash. Requests for added functionality to existing plug-ins, or new plug-ins, cannot be entertained at this point. You are free to build your own plug-ins. We will do our best to let you know if/when a rebuild may be necessary should the framework change. The open source code is still available where it has always been.

There has been NO DATE SPECIFIED as of this writing. However, we promise it wonít be 6 months from now. And it will be worth the wait.

Finally, we will do our best to answer your questions, but be patient. We all live and work in different time zones and may not be able to answer right away. But we will as soon as we can.

i've seen hints at this, though it is nice to see in writing. great work guys!

i know, this is not a bug, but something i've seen elsewhere-- a auto-updater.

the dfx skin has just started using this to make updates easier, and with OM still being in the early stages, i wonder if it is something worth attempting to implement early on to prevent redundant, dated, bug reports.

It has been a while for any real news other than "it's in development" or get a nightly build. Improvements, no matter if they are see-able are great. As a fellow programmer (not on OM team, but I lost all my plugin work I was doing for fun), I know that the little tweaks behind the scenes makes all the difference on a usable program or not.

This might intrigue me to pick up on something again! Thanks for the update!

We're not quite sure what is up with Justin. The last anyone heard from him was a couple months back. We wish him the best and will carry on with his dream

We're glad to see there is still interest out there! I like that idea and I'll check with the devs if that has been considered.

And suggestions ARE welcomed. Feel free to post a new thread with suggestions. We WILL make note of the suggestions, even if we don't give feedback right away.

I didn't count, but there is on the order of 50+ plug-ins coded up. The priority is most commonly needed/used items first.

    Cheers,
    John

There always seems to be demand for custom / specialty plug-ins. We will do our best to encourage you!

    Hey John,

Do you happen to have the links to the nightly builds and the sourceforge trunk? I used the sourceforge trunk link to look through the codes for the plugins if I needed some guidelines, it proved extremely helpful while developing and learning OM's framework. If not, may I ask for some of the source code that transitions between artists/cds/songs in the "newmedia" plugin. It's a really smooth transition between the lists, and I figure I could use the smooth transitions in plugins, cause the last I remember, I kept creating/destroying/hiding controls to clear the screen for a new set of controls.

If it sounds weird, let me know and I'll show ya what I mean (I found a reallllly old backup of my sports plugin). Figured if I start back up, at least 'freshen' it up as well .

Absolutely. We're excited to have folks get re-invigorated about the project.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/openmobile/develop

Click the "Browse Code" link and you can download the whole thing (tarball).

There will be a new commit in the not too distant future.

    Yes! Thanks for the link!

Sourceforge hasn't been going well for me lately, timing out etc. I reset my router and it works, weird but cool. Just an fyi in case others experience a crappy sourceforge.

    Back to re-writing I go...
