I can def. agree on those points heezer. Why re-invent the wheel? But, I'm right at home in the c#/vb ide's, whereas a graphics person won't be. However, developing a whole new 'fit to 1 situation' ide doesn't make sense. The time spent doing it, plus learning a whole new syntax isn't ideal.

I think the only way to truly get a breakthrough with graphics and ease of implementation is to combine the graphic designer with a programmer. I see way too many skins/plugins/etc go to the wayside cause it's too much for one person.

Yeah agreed. Some one spits out the images while another makes it work. We do plan to have a skin editor to help with layout I believe. At least I think that is what the old one did. I have stayed away from most of the skinning process so I am not the best person to answer all of these questions. Just thought it was important our general thoughts about where thrown out there.

Ok, so I threw a quick Mock-up together, the buttons are all layered psd files so those are easy to polish, and the text is an overlay so it can hopefully be generated by the interface instead of the skin.

I will try to describe my idea. First off is the standard volume buttons and mute at the bottom left, no big changes there.

Then the bottom middle has the dynamic Media change/seek buttons. Either for moving to another mp3, or for changing presets in the radio module depending on which is being used.

The bottom right had two buttons and one info panel. The one that says Wifi is jsut a simple Wifi/BT Status symbol that lights up depending on state of connection. next to that is a contextual button or a user changable button. I would think that the user can put it to their own choice is better(GPS/Music/Settings/whatever) finally next to that is the Home/Exit button. When on the main screen it will be a power button for the exit menu. inside any application it will be a home button to return to main.

Next we will goto the top left section with a six button multi-page plugin selector with the ability to be rearranged by user choice to present in their chosen order.

Finally the top right box. This is the one I forsee being a problem. I would like the ability to page through different mini-plugins. For example I just drew up a music plugin. It shows artist info allows for playing and stopping and of course media ejecting/playlist changing and finally the ability to change the music source(mp3/radio/BT).... That is jsut the beginning because I would also like it to be able to page to other plugins for example OBD information that shows simple car stats. Then also maybe a System stat page. And my favorite would be a mini GPS page(not unlike the ford Sync system) it has a small minimap that only shows current location, but when clicked can go to the full plugin screen for more options and abilities.

I also would put a small time/date portion at the top between the two main boxes.

This is what I would dream of having but I understand if it is not all possible as of yet. Please let me know what I should change and what would be needed if you are interested! Just remember that this is far from a final look!

I thought only talented people could apply...

JUST KIDDING...LOL. I like your idea, it's different. Not sure if there's enough room artist, song name...try Nick Cave and the bad Seeds (27 char), or Sly and the Family Stone (24). Of course, song names can be even longer, but you can always cut that. But I'd guess 30-35 characters at least? Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Lucy and the Sky with Diamonds, etc.

Everyone else make a skin scripting language - why not just use C#/VB?
Creates an editor - why not just use free versions of visual studio express? Its going to be a million times nicer than anything we could ever make.
The compiled code is going to be super fast and not restricted to the options implemented by the skinning code/scripting language.

It might be a little scary at first glance but once you get into it you will see if is pretty easy. I think the sets of graphic objects makes it even easier as you can take those items and reuse them all over without having to make new full screen images.

I like this idea. So I get the Visual Studio Express. What next? Do I import .pngs into it, play around with it, and it will spit out code? Then I upload the source+code+pngs to you guys? Just a general idea.

Well our plan for the original skin editor (at least I believe) was you could do the general layout and it would just auto generate the c# for you then from there you could edit it in VS to get all the fancy parts working.

I would say for right now work on the graphics stand alone and let borte and I chat a bit. From there maybe we can use this skin as examples of what we need to change still and can start streamlining the skinning process a bit over what we have predicted would be issues so far.

From what I can see how the default stuff is setup, You gotta generate a ui.dll (all the media/notifications/buttons/etc) and then the mainmenu.dll (the existing 9 main menu buttons and how they accept different plugins to be started)...

Also, Rippling, the express versions won't help with trying to debug class libraries or .dll's, so trying stuff would become pretty annoying/time consuming. The pro/ultimate versions will if set up right. If you want to see how the original ui/mainmenu c# looks, take a look at these:

Just as heezer7 said. I picked up the free VS and made my first (but amateurish) plugin for talking with an Arduino. Seemed daunting at the start. But following the code of other plugins and available samples + support from the devs, I got it to work. And I am not a .Net programmer. So I am confident that anyone that has experience in VS .Net can make plugins and skins
