A new idea for OpenMobile

Since the fall, I've been working on giving guest devices (iPad, Android, BB Playbook) access to internet and media while in my car.

I have a USB 3G internet stick plugged in to a 3G Wifi Router. Except for small issue with iOS (seems I have to give them dedicated IP with this router), this works rather well. I run TVersity on the carpc and each guest can watch media.

But I've been thinking: How can these guest systems benefit from OpenMobile?

Can a simple web server be added to OM? Maybe as a plugin? This would allow the guest to point their browser at OM. When a request is made for playback of a media file, rather than have a streaming server inside OM, perhaps it can re-direct with a request to a seperate media server (TVersity in my case) and TVersity can begin the streaming back to the guest.

Am I crazy? Is it "too much work"? Is there better solutions?

Take a look at VLC media player. I think it can do what you are talking about, and I believe its open source :)

I have played with VLC before. But TVersity is working for me as a media server (both in the car and in the house).

I'm more looking at OM and how it can be extended to welcome guest devices into the car. Tossing out ideas to see what others are thinking and see if we can get a brainstorm session happening.

I certainly don't have enough knowledge to know what is involved. The picture in my head though, is OM listening on port 80 (or whatever) and offering up some pages with Javascript/CSS/etc. but not a full blown transcoding media server. Maybe the pages served up with redirect the users request(s) to TVersity (or even VLC), acting as sort of a go-between.

This is just concept. Actual workings are probably way different for all I know. Currently the devices I have tried in the car can get internet, and can access the TVersity server and watch movies / play music. I just think it would be more consistent if the in-car screens AND any guest devices have the same user experience.

Don't need Openmobile. Just install apache and create a simple web page. Also, there's subsonic. Which is essentially a music serving web server. There are pretty good clients for android and iOS (and nobody should really even care about BB or Windows Phone).

Ha ha ha ha. I totally get where you are going. However, I definitely DO want OpenMobile in my car. Especially for my "head unit" with all the features (mp3s, movies, gps, remote LCD, Arduino stuff) all nicely integrated.

Perhaps I am misleading. It's not that I have a need that needs to be filled. I would just like to see the OM experience across all clients be they direct connected displays or guest devices. It's just cleaner, nicer to "show off", etc. Just because we can!
