For you perusal - A work in progress.

As mentioned in another thread earlier, I am posting up what should be considered a "glimpse" into the new OpenMobile front end.

I post it here with the condition that folks view this as an unsupported preview. Most of us have intense work schedules right now. While I am kinda the P.R. guy (sort of anyway), I have the least experience in development. While somebody may be able to answer a usage question or two (likely me), this version has known issues. So please do not inundate us with bug reports. You can, however, post comments about what you like about it . This is only a teaser release.

    Usage:

    • Note that some things are a simple click. Some are long click and some are click-hold.
    • Touching the top status bar will drop down a message list, similar to Android.
    • Long click a main menu button to assign/reassign/deassign buttons.
    • On the drop-down message list, select settings to put things the way you want.
    • OpenMobile supports multiple zones. If you have multiple monitors, input devices, audio devices then it should auto-detect and set up accordingly. There are options in the settings to tweak it.
    • Be sure to point the OMMediaDB2 settings to your music library
    • You can disable a plugin in the plugin settings. Or remove it's respective DLL from the Plugins Folder under your OpenMobile folder.

Some of the known issues are:

    • OM will run on both OpenGL 1 and 2+. OM has separate graphic engines for both OpenGL 1/2 (and partially ES) but after the last major rewrite not all graphic functions have been moved back to the OpenGL 1 engine. All compatible features will be moved back to OpenGL 1 but this has not been the top priority lately. The black dull appearance of OM would indicate it running in OpenGL 1 mode. Sometimes this can be corrected by upgrading the OpenGL drivers but sometimes it's also set by the hardware.
    • Media player is incomplete. While you can get a feel for it, it may not behave as expected.
    • OM Maps is incomplete. If you have a NMEA GPS device you should be able to view a map. An active internet connection is required to get some cached maps saved (automatic).
    • OMFuel buggy. There seems to be a problem when first using OMFuel not fetching local fuel prices. Requires an internet connection.
    • OMArduino. Arduino needs to have Firmata on it, connected and detected as a COM port. Currently it shows current I/O pin configuration and will allow toggle of digital outputs. Will auto-detect the first attached Arduino.
    • OMLCD requires a Matrix Orbital character based LCD connected as a COM port. Most models are auto-detected.
    • OMWeather requires an active internet connection.
    • OMSports started out as OMNFL. It is evolving to include other major sports and is incomplete.

Okay, there is probably more. But we'll cover them as we get to them.

Download the ZIP file. Extract it to a folder. Run the OpenMobile.exe file. To launch full screen use '-fullscreen' as a command line parameter, less the quotes.

C:\OpenMobile\OpenMobile.exe -fullscreen (assumes you extracted to C:\OpenMobile folder)

Zip usage info (upgrading from older legacy OM):
To use the zip file for OM you have to do a few steps if you've tested OM on your computer before (it's enough if you started OM once before even from a different folder) and as there's currently no setup program you have to do these steps manually:

    • If running win7: Locate the folder c:users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\openMobile and delete ALL files in that folder
    • If running another OS: Search for openMobile folder as I can't remember where it's located on all os's
    • Unzip the zip to a fresh location (Don't unzip over another install)
    • Run OpenMobile.exe

NB! The first time OM is started it will take some time as it configures it's environment and installs proper 32/64 bit files for certain plugins. Also, you may find it helpful to disable certain plugins if they are not applicable for your situation (Settings -> Plugin Settings -> Uncheck checkboxes)

Also XP support might be somewhat unstable as it hasn't been tested in a while.

    Okay, so without further delay.....

    Updated: 2014-11-23
    OpenMobile_20141123.zip
    * Music player updated. Option to fill current playlist with ALL items. Does not yet play CDs or DVDs.
    * Fixed: improper item positions in popup menus ( ^ at bottom right in some plugins).
    * OMFuel popup menu issue fixed.
    * Touch scroll mode user selectable ("throw" or "drag" - System Settings).
    * Minor mods to OMArduino.

    Helpful hint by marlo:

Do this from the RUN command: gpedit.msc

    now go to:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Attachment Manager
Select attachment manager and enable: "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments"

This should stop the problem happening in the future. Now delete OM fom your system (including folder from appdata/roaming).

right click on the OM zip file and choose properties. At the bottom of that window you'll see a message "this file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer - choose unblock.

This is what I did on my system. I then extracted the folder to the desktop and ran it, and it runs fine.

I'll be giving it a good look tonight. I assume Monkeyboard DAB+ not setup for this demo?
    It looks good.

Borte is the one with the hardware for DAB. I am not sure what hardware he has or how far along he is with it.

I know you said go easy on the bug reports, but I'd love to at least see it
I get a message box reporting No UI Skin available! when I try to launch the exe.

Sorry folks. I'm not sure why that would be. When I unzip to a folder and run the .exe it works for me.

Navigate to your user folder c:\users\xxxxxx\appdata\roaming\openmobile and check for "debug.txt" file. There should be a hint in there.

I will try to find out what is going on.

The error indicates that UI.DLL and/or MainMenu.DLL are not being loaded. These are in the .\skins\default folder.

I took the zip file and extracted to a folder on a PC that has never had OM installed, and it ran fine. I'm going to need a little more information to be of assistance.

The error only occurs in one of 2 places in code. I updated the ZIP file with modified code so the error message indicates where the error is occurring.

    Hi there,
I saw the problem the other guys were having loading OM so I checked it some of my setups for comparison.

My socket 750 - 7x64 machine - same UI skin error as noted above
    - the same machine running xp - no problems.

i5 win 7 x64 machine - loads and runs but had issues (many system not responding) on first boot. better after restart.

i3 win 8.1 pro machine - worked off the bat and runs much smoother than the others. I should note I don't run any antivirus on this machine.

Excluding my win 8 machine, both seemed to run better when enhanced graphics was toggles off, then back on.

Hmmm. Interesting. I "may" have to refer this to the lead guy when he is available. I run 7x32 (previously XP) and he runs 7x64. On a fresh install on a 7x32 and an 8.1 tablet I have no problems. My 7x64 machine at work had no problems. But having you folks try this is great as we get a bigger variety of systems to point out potential issues.

mspw: Could you elaborate on the "many system not responding"? It might give us a better idea.

Until I can get some feedback from the others, there are a couple things I can think of to check.

    • Does your video support OpenGL 2+?
    • Do you have full dotNet 4 (not client edition)? I had to do that in my car to cure a couple things (not sure why I had to).
    • Do you have Account Control on or off? Shouldn't matter but I can't be sure.
    • Can you attach the debug.txt file here? Find it in c:\users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\openMobile

I'm asking patience at this point. I will try to get answers. I'm only a guy that got into this making a few plugins, and doing testing, and am less experienced than the others. While I have a couple different machines I have tested on, there are possibly scenarios we haven't encountered.
