Please Point me in the right direction

My car PC wont boot up Windows. I did a search on this site to see if there was a thread pertaining to my problem, but no luck.
When the PC gets powered up I get the initial "Intel" screen, and then it appears that it's gonna go to the "Windows" screen but instead all I get is a black screen stating...

"Windows can't start because the
Windows\system32\config\system
file is corrupt or missing. You may attempt to repair this by using the original Windows set up cd rom and selecting "R" on the 1st screen"

My problem is that I purchased my Car PC with the OS already installed and I don't have the original Windows CD Rom used to install the OS.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Will I have to re-install Windows? If I do have to re-install my OS, that would basically mean that all the programs on my PC are lost too, huh? I never had to do a re-install so please excuse my ignorance. I really need to know where I can get a Windows XP OS CD Rom cause I don't want that Vista crap on my PC...

If there is a thread that can help me remedy this issue, then please point me to it cause my search didn't pull anything up that answered my questions....

Hi Blackchevyss,

Threre are several methods you can try to fix your issue but they all require an XP CD with recovery console to repair or reinstall XP.

As far as obtaining a copy of XP that's your choice you can purchase a copy or perhaps a friend can "err", "cough", "cough" ,"lend" you a copy.

This link has several solutions for your issue but honestly in most case's you will just end up having to reinstall windows (meaning you will lose your data). If you have a second PC you can proabaly remove your CarPC hard drive and copy your data but you will have to reinstall all your programs.

In the future you may want to consider using an imaging software such as paragon drive backup for making backuups of you OS once configured.

Thank you, Kimota.... I'm looking into getting a, um, "Borrowed" copy now....I'm a virgin to all this so I hope I perform well, so to speak!
