So What Is The Fastest Boot Up Time I Can Expect............??

So what is the fastest boot up time I can expect using a normal version of XP Pro w/SP1, M10000 Via motherboard with 512 MB of memory? I have used OS optimizers such as TuneXP and TweakUI (but I admit that I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to using these programs for full OS optimization) and also adjusted several services to help free up resources.

Hibernation is out the window for me now since I ruined two batteries due to too many deep cycles, so a cold boot is my only acceptable option. I was able to get down to approx 30 secs from turn the key to RR up and running. So is this the best it is going to get without going out and buying some "compressed" version of XP or upgrading my hardware?

30 seconds for that board is fast. Without upgrading, that is the best u going to get.

Erm, wtf...! I don't understand. Why/how does hibernation ruin batteries? Hibernation takes no power when hibernated. If it does you're doing it wrong...! Do you perhaps mean standby?

If you leave the car without being started for a week or more, it will drain the battery using hibernation.

Bingo! When I originally built my CarPC I set my M1-ATX power supply HARDOFF setting to "never" The thought process was that since my car is driven every day, they battery should never get too drained. And if it does sit for a week or so, the M1-ATX will cut power to the 5V rail when voltage gets to 11V, thus leaving enough starting voltage.

Unfortunately this plan was flawed from the start. 1) My car (and most cars) needs at least 12.3 volts or so to start (found that out the hard way). 2) After being deep cycled a few times, the battery slowly started to die and got to the point where it wouldn't take a charge from the alternator or external charger.

So to save my battery, I no longer have the HARDOFF set to "never" and therefore must use a cold startup every time I get into the car.

I still don't get it...

My M2-ATX is set to "hardoff" after 2 hours and I'm using Hibernation also. Once the PC has gone into hibernation you can disconnect all power. This will have no effect. When you bring the power back on the PC will come out of hibernation.

This should work. My previous PC was also based on the M10000 board in combination with a M1-ATX. There "hardoff" set to 2 hours and using hibernation also worked.

When I upgraded my PC to the current Intel, I removed the complete M10000 from the car when it was in Hibernation. I sold it to a friend of mine. It layed in the garage for several weeks before putting it in his van. Once installed it came out of hibernation nicely. Then it started to act funky because of the fact that totaly different hardware was connected to the USB ports now then before it went into hibernation. But the point is, it still came out of hibernate even after laying in the garage for weeks with no power connected at all.

Are you sure you're not using standby instead of hibernate?

Maybe the problem is that you have put it into standby instead of hibernate, but still if he set it to hardoff in 2hours, it wouldn't matter which mode he sets it in because it will lose all power after 2 hours. maybe you set it to a lower time, why leave it hibernating for 2hours....

Hmmmm....

Now that is interesting. It was my understanding that when using hibernation, the 5V rail needed to remain powered after the computer went into hibernation. Otherwise, when the 5V rail power was cut, the computer would "lose" it's hibernation state, thus performing a cold start once power was re-applied. It was using that assumption when I set HARDOFF to "never", assuming the computer still needed to see the 5V rail when in hibernation.

Right now I have HARDOFF set to "45 secs" since I figured I would be doing cold starts every time I get into the car. Based on what you said, I will give the hibernation setting a try again. If it works like you described above, my resume time will be cut in half (which is what it was when I was using hibernation before).

Hibernate don't need no power :)
