what HDD are you using? have you run a chkdsk? how much RAM do you have?
If it shut down the computer, and do a fresh start up, it takes about 30-35 seconds consistantly. Now if i resume from hibernation, it takes well over a minute. what gives?

its a 20gig seagate . This is on a fresh install of xp. no other programs loaded yet. I have 2gigs of ram. Dont know what chkdsk is.
If you have lots of ram and a slow drive, resume is going to be slow. Windows doesn't compress the hibernate image either, so you will be bottlenecked by the transfer speed of your hdd. 20gigs sounds pretty old. I'm betting it's probably 5400rpms too.

@tom04841:
More ram is better was a tactic that was used for years to boost hardware sales.....its really only true in very memory intensive tasks like photo/video editing.
@kev000:
Windows only moves used pages to the pagefile but since the pages can be scattered throughout the memory map it usually is a lot more data moved then actually used. I should also add that hibernation files since xp have been compressed but the full size of the physical ram is allocated when hibernation is enabled to prevent fragmentation. Most of the file is empty if you flip through it.

That's curious. I have 2 gig of ram too, a 5400 rpm 160gig scorpio blu, xp sp3, it takes 12s to hibernate, 8 to resume, and 25s @ cold boot. I have xp prefetcher disabled, so it doesn't preload ram with tons of stuff "I could use".
Of course some services are disabled, too
