    OS questions

I'm still in the stage of designing my system, lots of parts are on order. I've been reading through these forums and it seems XP pro is the way to go. However i've seen references to nLite? What exactly is this. I went to the home page but it looks like Add/Remove programs (im sure it isnt though)

Can anyone tell me the advantage of using it? Cheers!

nLite is a program which allows you to slim your XP installation so it only installs what you want. It's a great way to optimize a CarPC installation. It'll cut down on the amount of space your OS takes up as well as increase boot time and decrease memory usage. It may take you a couple of tries to get it right so it's best to use something like VirtualPC or VMWare (both have trial versions) to test out your installation. Keep in mind that nLite creates a custom setup CD. You can't use it remove stuff from an existing OS installation.

go here for my instructions on minlogon and ewf: http://osf1.gmu.edu/~sfiorito/eXPinstall.htm

EWF is only necessary if you want to run your OS from a flash drive and minlogon may cause problems with certain OS features.

    New to the game

I'm building a computer for my car at the moment based around an EPIA motherboard. I am using a 1Gb CF card in an IDE-CF adapter running an nlite'd XP Pro installation it all seems fine, even with a small page file and a small amount of memory.

SFiorito - You say that "EWF is only necessary if you want to run your OS from a flash drive", am I heading into a whole heap of trouble by not using it?

I hope you don't mind the question!

    Thanks in advance,

    Easty.

yes, you're heading for trouble because flash drives can only handle a limited number of writes. it's one thing to use them for cameras or small files to carry here and there, but an OS does a LOT of writing to the disk especially if you're using a page file. you really should be using EWF.
