Bios & POST times
I've spent some time poking around with old systems I have to use as a car pc. The best option at the moment is an old 733MHz Gateway I had in college. The problem here is that it takes about 20 seconds to load the bios and run some memory/hd/etc tests before it even starts loading my OS. I haven't found a way to reduce this time. I've gone through all of the bios options, I've looked at gateway's site for other bios (which have no great effect)... so I've pretty much ruled this option out.
I'm looking for something that can boot up and be playing music in around 15 seconds. I'm interested in the VIA EPIA M10000, but I'd like to know if anyone has some numbers for this or another similarly priced option. Anyone have any suggestions?
I use a via m10k, and from cold boot to music playing in RR, about 20seconds. Just disable everything in BIOS like LAN boot, and set the primary boot device to where windows' MBR is. Also enable quick boot, and disable DOS support for USB, and everything pretty much.
And that isn't optimized btw, on a 3.5" 7200 RPM IDE drive and 1Gb RAM
Genuine Intel D865GLC motherboard - Socket 478 P4 2.4G w/ Hyperthreading.
Onboard VGA - Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (not amazing, but sufficient)
Customizable boot logo.
POST+Bios is complete in 5.5 seconds.
After that it sits waiting for drives to spin up etc.
Toaster: outside of your OS boot time, how long does it take for it to complete the POST? I'm interested in this because load times for windows or linux can vary quite a bit. The M10k is still the most appealing at the moment.
Iceman: 2.4G seems like an overkill for my application. Low power consumption is something that is difficult to find when you start getting into the higher clocked CPUs.
Maybe some embedded system running with WinCE could be a possibilty. Although I can't think of a good place to start with that idea unless I spec out something from scratch... Any good ARM9 or Coldfire tools that could be hacked for a different purpose?
I believe some P4-M chips can work on this chipset - but I'm not 100% sure.
I am doing some fairly intensive background processing for my audio, and the P4 comes in handy for that. Also, I havent seen ANYWHERE a bios as fast as mine. I will conceed that my HDD (spinup time ~9sec) now ruins my potential for a SPEEDY boot time, but the board is a step in the right direction. I'll probably get a Samsung Flashdisk HDD for the OS disk when they come out in a few months time.
When that happens I'll be expecting ~14second cold boots and <10 resume-from-hibernate.
Hrmm, those numbers are very enticing. I'll do some more research on that board.
POST is a just over 3 seconds because I have it set to wait for 1 second to allow IDE spinnup just in case the drive is cold or something. Then everything is disabled, and I have the IDE channel manually set to a harddrive. That way it doesnt take time to auto detect.

Very fast. I dont know why people complain about boot times. My old HU took about 15-18 seconds to boot up and say "Hello" then load the mp3 files and everything from the CD. I dont mind waiting and extra 2-5 seconds for a full computer!!!

DAMN!... and I thought mine was fast...
Cant understand why I hear of all these Via board having long POST times :(
Either way, hopefully the FAST solidstate HDD's will be reasonably priced and available soon.
