Yep, there's no reason why you can't cherry pick services to run on your home server. It is open source after all. Many of the crowd sourcing services are only useful with a large community providing data (otherwise your traffic data is going to show your traffic condition which isn't very useful).

The Consumer applications that use the services will have to work out how to do syncing when offline. It shouldn't be that hard to do.

I know it's open source so that anything can be done, but wery often open source also means "not that user friendly". I don't think a user would bother with installing and setting it up if it's not more or less click and install...

I'm not saying that I wount use it anyway (i love hacking things together), I'm just saying that to be able to hit a broad user mass a system has to be easy to use and setup.

But then again I guess it's a bit too early to be talking about the end user since it's only in the concept stage...

I should add that although it is all openSource the web service is designed to run on a web server so I don't think most of the services will be available via point and click.

Users spend hours trying to get rr configured, I imagine they would be able to handle 15mins for 10x the features......but in reality this functionality will probably be very easy to setup for any of the modular FE's...just click to install.

But then again I guess it's a bit too early to be talking about the end user since it's only in the concept stage...

Theres actually a good bit of the project in code already...I wouldn't be surprised if there was something live in a week or two.
