I'd like to see as much interaction with Google as possible.
-Sync with google calender
-Use SyncML
-Sync with folder on home computer
You need bigger buttons, and/or a tactile anchor/reference point near the screen.
That is a very cool idea. It's true that you have to look at the screen to tell what is highlighted, but that's a good opportunity for the voice control to speak up and tell you, so you don't have to look at it.

Suggest that when an item is selected that it zoom larger, like it is being magnified.
Also, when you double click to bring up that common controls menu, I also suggest that it be defaulted to a mute button, which doesn't appear to be one of the items on the common controls.

Thanks for all the input
Google Sync as well as the ability to sync to your home computer to automatically transfer files will be available.
The Google sync will be available one of two ways: one is when your car is parked near enough to your house to pick up your wifi signal, and the other is using a live internet connection, such as pairing your phone with the carputer or through a device like the MiFi from Verizon or Sprint
Oh yeah... that rings a bell. I gotta play with those some time.
Lets be honest, the safest way to navigate a car pc is to implement a highly specific/trained and accurate voice command interface. Similar to OneVoice on Streetdeck, before that **** hit the fan. Then it would only require 1 button, usually a steering wheel button, and u just tell the PC what to do, and it repeats what its doing and does it! Safest way possible that I can think of. Good thing about this is it's starting to get popular.
I'd like to add my opinion on why you should still tailor your FE toward touchscreen.
Systems with stuff like the powermate, iDriver...etc. all require you to know where the selection is, therefore you can't really take your eyes off of the screen. On the other side of the issue, touchscreen although you have to point to a spot to click, most people like myself, has done it 1000s times and memorized where most things are. I can usually next songs/play/pause without looking at the screen at all. Altogether you can always achieve more per press/click with a touchscreen. The only way you can true take your eyes off the screen is perfect speech recognition, which is more expensive to do in my opinion.
Okay, so i have moved on from this project, because I have found someone else who wanted to work on a front end that went along with what I had in mind.
so i have been devoting my efforts on OpenMobile led by justchat_1
IMHO this project is coming along very nicely, I think you should check it out
