I've been in love with my CarPC for the last 3 years......

I've been using a samsung galaxy s as a phone for the last six months, Android with Google's online resources (Maps/Nav/Search/Voice etc) are better than anything I've been able to accomplish on the CarPC.....

I'm waiting for the right tablet (8.9 Samsung Tab 2 ?) and am converting to android...the apps and integration / convergence of them is hard to beat...we do need the community to come up with some innovate software/hardware ie fusion brain for android etc.....

Yeah i am pretty sure you have to reboot all the time. When I had a car pc that has issues all the time. I have a tablet now and it is the best decision I've ever made.

So what do you do when Somebody wantS to Steal your whole unit out of your car but you can't do anything becauSe it'S Stuck in your car?

The best thing about having a tablet is you can bring it with you where ever you like. Battery last for 10 hours. I guess you can do all that with your with your carpc. huh!!!

I havent been doing this for a very long time, my very first attempt on a carpc was 2 years back and wasnt even documented, but I think I have caught the 'bug' and I am not planning on stopping or changing to an android device , for the reasons stated above, I do this because its my hobby, I like creating custom solutions to whatever problems I run into , I hate the idea of an oem device or I would have bought a 2din dvd/gps device wich are on the market for a while now

You gotta be kidding me. Android tablets are perfect for the car. There in expensive and everything is already there. I had a carpc with ride runner and what a nightmare. It would work great for a week or two and then what do you know I have to reboot. Even worst with windows xp. Anyone thinking of tablet or carpc...tablet is the way to go. Carpc have been passed up with the new technology. Good luck to all the carpcers ...don't forget to reboot!!

Sure it's great for mobile devices, and perhaps even for headunits for the less technologically savvy folks to give them more features and options, but it will never take the place of a real OS for carpc's. There is so much you just plain can't do on android devices. Even if you hack android to put it on say, x86 hardware, you're still running into the same limited hardware support issues that you would have otherwise. In the carpc world, hardware support is everything. Android just dosen't have it. It's a purpose built operating system, and the carpc does not conform to such limitations well.

Not even going into the other points about expandability, memory for large music collections, video processing power for multiple monitors and video games, and so on and so forth.

That being said, if you're building a carpc for a permanent never-touch device, then if an Android tablet does everything you need it to, there you go. But personally for me, and many others who are in this for the hobby, not for the end result, it does not, and never will do enough.

A while back I mentioned that the carpc needed to be taken to a new level but the OEM argument was just too strong.

Now we have android and hardware it comes on. A differentiation needs to be made here. Android does not equal tablets. It's just an OS. Can android as an OS change the carpc world? I believe so. However the above arguments about what is wrong with Android, at the moment, are pretty spot on. But could it, with changes, become a force to be reckoned with in your car? Yes!

Tablets, as mentioned, just barely scratch the surface of what a PC can do but if the right hardware came along that also android / meego / Ubuntu would support. Then I think the carpc, as we know it, is going to be facing some serious competition or even some hurt!

But not until then. The carpc will rule until an OS and hardware comes together that finally scratches most of our itches.

One project that has my attention is Ubuntu TV. I had a similar idea right after I got my first iPhone 3G.

Smart phones are actually what are going to lead how the home and car media turns into. After that it'll lead how and what we will use on our desks. Towers will still exist for their dedicated purposes but most people will probably have these hybrid phone/PC setups that will cater to most our needs, even photoshop!

Perhaps you should learn how computers work and then you might not have these problems.
