well resurrecting is a big word.... I did do some work on it. If you know how to get the CVS version, you can see the changes I made. It's not much, mainly just a skin changer and some panels load faster. I don't have much money to work on a Car PC system right now so I'm not too involved in this project at the moment.

I'd like to see a version 0.4 out soon so that it shows that it is going forward(slowly) but I don't have access to create files.

Ok... So from what I have read in this thread, and through other forums, there's isn't actually a specific CarPC Linux distro... Is this right?

The reason I ask, is I am one of those numerous Windows users who would like to use Linux in my CarPC, but cannot find a simple solution to easily get me going so that I might learn more by tinkering.

I learnt what little Win PC skills I have by trial and error, with the simple knowledge that if I stuffed it, I could easily reinstall.

However everything that I have read on here seems to inticate thats not so easy with linux.

Anyway... If anyone knows of a Distro, or even a tutorial on getting a Linux Car PC up and running, could they please let me know.

That is basically correct.

If you are learning Linux, this isn't the place to start. A carpc will require a custom installation of Linux, strange device drivers (touch screen drivers), enabling hibernation (or tuning the boot process a lot), etc. Maybe start with a mainstream linux distribution on common desktop hardware. Learn how to modify that, and then decide if you want to move onto the carpc environment.

I don't want to be discouraging, I just don't want you to have a discouraging first experience.

Yah linux isn't easy. I also was wondering about a linux front end. Syridian, Maybe you could download mandrake or another downloadable copy of linux and play with it first. Windows is much easier to mess with though. I should install my copy of mandrake 10.0 but im lazzy

hi all, i've stopped working on headunit (and my CarPC hobby) ever since I got rid of my RX-7 (*sniff*). anyway, if anyone would like to take over the project, i can give them full write access to the CVS tree. please send me a PM if you are interested and have the C++ experience necessary to charge forward!

i'll be available for assistance in the beginning to help you get started with the code.
