I plan on running 2 screens & building a skin that spans both, but any dual screen support would be a very welcome addition to any frontend.. the more elaborate & flexable the better I would think...

I would like to have open source, but not so open! I mean, for people on this website, I will be giving this app for free (I would take contributions of course ). But should I decide to sell this to a car manufacturer or bundle it in some hardware solution, then I would not want to be bound by anything, nor would I want someone else beating me to it, hence the closed source.

from my experience with linux, it's a horrible OS for research and development, as I've spent most of my time in configuring rather than experimenting. Regarding mono, that may work for the framework of the app, but my worry lies in the drivers to media/phone etc.

I'll post some design docs when i get on the way a bit.

a web based solution would solve all of the multiple screen issues, and in a versatile way too.

T9 sounds very nice. I'll stick that in too

could be excellent, but I'm always scared of over modding my dash for when it comes time to sell the car. but that's just me!

It has to be FAST first off...
The best thing would be the app had itīs own os, so you wouldnīt be dependent on that..but then thereīs the compability issue to take in mind..
As you said, linux would be a great base if u could make it work like a total standalone app.

as we've come to learn with FP and RR, open source is huge. On top of this verison management would be another huge step. I would love to be part of a group project, using subversion. Also I do like the idea of cross platform, but like stated before codecs, filemangement, navigation etc can get difficult. I'd be interested in doing a group project similar to pycar, but with wxpython (a graphics library that uses native apis).

I think the program should definatly be programmed around the file navigation(db) and playback support, and plugin support. Look and feal are completely meaningless since adding skin support can all be done later. Even adding flash support can be done at the end. If network functionality could be built in early on, turbo cad's idea of a webpage front end would be totally doable, as a branch off of this project.

I propose either Java, C++ designed around a cross platform graphics library, or Python. My recommendation is python for ease of use and rapid development.

I'd prefer as little reliance on external apps as possible.. for instance, the reason I will never use RoadRunner is because it has to fire up WinAmp and have it run hidden.

Also, ease of configuration is another big one..

BTW folks, let Sama know what type of Media Manager you're interested in for this frontend: Browse by File or by ID3?

What about an ibus controlled frontend
there are four buttons located on your steerwheel
    <, >, +, -
and one more additional "ibus menu button" which allows you enable and disable ibus menu instantly.
if ibus menu disabled you can use these steerwheel buttons for prev, next, vol+ and vol-
and if you enable ibus menu
you can navigate between the functions and do anything
< is scroll up between the options, > is scroll down, + select the option, - go one level up. Tft screens have an osd menu system like this. Even you can type with + and - (like old arcade games ranking list), > accept, < cancel.
One more thing. You can support this ibus menu with a voice guide system that can read the options and say what happened. You even don't have to look at the screen as you are navigating.
it would be great. Tell me if i overheat you sama.
