CarShell : touch-screen friendly shell and password application

This software is a little project that I have been working on to make navigating my carputer easier. It is designed to run on startup and replace explorer as the system shell. Currently it does run as a shell and also decreases boot time somewhat (see further down the thread). It can also run on top of explorer and load out of the startup menu and run as a normal application in windows. Either mode provides the same functionality,

There are three tabs on the main ‘desktop’ and the content of each tab is completely dynamic. There is also a ‘MiniShell’ that has 5 buttons, 4 of which can be set to run any app that is setup on CarShell (the 5th returns you to the main desktop). The MiniShell has an adjustable opacity settings so you can make it transparent and it will remember where it was last positioned and re-appear there on the next load of the software.

The software has an optional touch-screen friendly password application that will require the user to enter a code before continuing, the software works while the software is running as shell or over explorer, but it is slightly more secure when it is run when CarShell is set as the system shell. CarShell also can load one software on startup (frontend or whatever).

THIS SOFTWARE IS BETA AND IS STILL BEING TESTED!!!!!!!!!

If you would like to try it please understand that it is still a work in progress. All feedback and ideas are welcome.

    CURRENT PROBLEMS :
For some reason the MSI installer insists on creating a desktop and startup icon regardless of which ones are checked on the form. I have set conditions for the folders and have no idea why it is happening (if someone knows please share ) for right now if you don’t want a CarShell desktop icon or do not want carshell to be loaded on windows startup simply remove the icon from the desktop or the shortcut from the startup folder after installation.

Currently carshell must be installed in c:\program files\carshell\ and your windows installation must be in c:\windows\ If your computer is not using these folders carshell will not work. I should be fixing this very soon.

Please use the ‘use carshell as system shell’ setting if you feel comfortable doing so. While the software is working as a shell and it is relatively simple to get explorer back as a shell if something does go wrong, the possibility for serious complications do exist.

Think that is about it, hope the software is helpful.

Thanks to DrWeside for helping inspire the idea and to Frodo for his shutdown DLL

    INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. Remove any previous versions in add/remove programs, it is also a good idea to delete the program files\carshell directory (you can hold onto the setup.xml file so you dont have to redo your settings, just save it somewhare else then copy it back into the application folder)

    **********************************************

    3. Run setup.exe

4 . IMPORTAINT! after installation is complete go to the c:\program files\carshell directory and run the file 'reg.bat'

Now you are ready to go!

    Thanks

I just put up an update, Frodo's shutdown dll is now working, so standby and hibernation are working correctly (thanks again frodo)

EDIT: here is a new screenshot, will update the first post later. I also made the buttons along the bottem bigger, and changed the icons.

wow... this really takes away from the windows feeling!

    great work!

Anything you can do to improve startup times? and I suppose you can disable password and have it launch a frontend immediately right?

thanks RoyN, thats what i was going for i was getting tired of tring to navigate the start menu and i have a 10.4, can image it on a 7"

I am going to work on the start times when booting as the shell, It seems anything other then explorer causes lag, so i am going to spend more time on it.

I updated the 1st post, I forgot to mention that frodo's dll will need to be registered on the computer, I put a batch file in the install to handle it, just follow the directions above
