    Is this possible?

Have a cell phone wired to the car pc such that a first attempt to call it turns the car pc on (from hibernate) and then SMS messages can be sent to trigger actions (such as starting the engine in order to warm the car on cold days!).

Definitely. Since the title of that about using a cell phone to toggle the door locks I didn't look at it. It doesn't really have anything very enlightening in there - and nothing, that I could see, related to how your could get your car pc to turn on by cell phone.

Really? And you didn't see this link? Basically, if you can trigger door locks then you should easily trigger your carpc to power up.

I should have been more clear. That hardware solution doesn't meet my needs since the phone needs to be plugged into the PC and I want the PC to get the SMS text. I believe that part's doable entirely in software (why add hardware if the PC hardware is capable of doing the same job). Although I haven't yet worked out what software will receive SMS on the PC.

The tricky part that I haven't got a clue about is getting a first ring/SMS to turn on the PC if it's hibernated.

The only way to achive this is to use an external piece of hardware cause you don't have any "ports" on you mobile which can be switsched via software.

For other things (once the OC is running) you can easily use the Remote Control Interface of PhoCo and parse SMS custom messages.

If I switched to a serial cable instead of a USB one, would there be any detectable activity when the phone started ringing?

If your computer is set to wake up on serial port Comptuers can do wake on LAN or wake on keyboard.
