    Power Question

So I bought this system from a member here on this board. I may need to build a new case for it because I want to put the system in place of my head unit.

The question is how to power all of this stuff. I'm new to all of this and have just used inverters in the past. For this install I want it to be as permanent as possible. Meaning, (in my simple minded terms) I want the power to go from the Battery to the shutdown controller to the PSU in the case and I'll want to power my Monitor and re-radiating antenna for my GPS. What if anything will need to be done to a

VIA Mini ITX C3 800mhz system w/128mb SDRAM and Mini ITX case, power supply, and F1064A 12V 3.3A DC power supply to make this all work?

Thanks for all of your help and advice.

    Thanks,
    Greg

your defenitely going to want to use a laptop drive to do this... they require much less space and take bumps a lot better. also i was wondering.... does that power supply power that c3 board... have you had it running off that?? cause i have the via epia 5000 which is like only 533mhz and it requires even less power and if that thing powers your system.. then you may have just inevertantly solved one of my problems.... whats the height of the stereo bin in your cars dash... standard is 50mm.... so you have roughly 2" to work with.... the motherboard height is 1.5" in most areas, between the processor and pci slot is the lowest area like only 1" so if your power supply is larger than 1" tall then you will have to put the power supply in the back of your unit.... this may or may not work, depending on the depth of your cars stereo dash bay. I will have my power supply abve my pci card area.. because the board measures 17cm square... and the most alowance i have for depth is about 18cm... well i am not going to find a power supply that is only 1cm.. smallest i have seen is 3cm. good luck to you on what your doing... im pretty much trying to do the same thing.... does your serial port work on your motherboard i cant get mine to work at all... in dos or windows?

I'm working on a doubledin player with dvd, lcd, and control buttons.

A singledin player is going to be very very tight fit. The psu is going to have to go in front of or behind the mobo. Cooling this is going to be very difficult. The cpu and psu don't make very much heat.. but in such a cramped space it can become pretty hot pretty fast.

The overall size of your unit is going to be at least 2x7x9 you'll possibly have to go as far as 2x7x10 depending on how you set it up. Make sure you've got the room for a player this size before you start!

I have yet to measure the space but I can tell you this... It's a huge space. Here is a link that shows the Head unit out

    http://www.aztek-mods.us/aztek-mods/...uxFMMod21.html

I've even gone as far as considering pulling all of the guts out of the case that the head unit is in and using it as the case to my in dash carputer.

How is that for an idea?

I may be playing with fire here, but sometimes I wish some people (mentioning no names mp3 kid!) would keep their mouthes shut if they have nothing useful to say. The idea of the forums here is to help people out, we were all new to this at some time and we should try to consider what it's like for a "newbie". After all there's so much information to take in and so many different designs, and if you have never done anything like this before I can't even begin to imagine how confusing it is. There are so many different threads on power supplies, so even if you do use the search function it doesn't make it any easier to choose a design. Just thought I would share my feelings on the matter.

    Matthew,
Thank you! I can't tell you how many times I've searched the forum and just ended up confusing myself even further. I get to the point where I am so frustrated that I finally ask the question... However since I'm not sure how many of this works I don't even know how to correctly word the question.

Maybe if this forum had a NEWBIE section that tailored it's discussions to the not so bright ones like me....

    Thanks,
    Greg

It looks like you have a double din unit, so you should have plenty of room.

If you are going to be using the casing for your HU the only thing I'd worry about is depth. I can't tell from your photo, but most HUs aren't that deep, usually around 6" deep. You need yours to be at least 7" (mine is about 8.5 I might stretch it to 9 if i make a detachable faceplate)
