    2 reasons:

    1. I need a separate supply for the display. So I'm only buying one for the PC.

    2. I'd like to set it up so that I can power the system from 110V in my garage for backup, file transfers, maintenance, defrag, etc. and not have to run the engine or discharge the battery. If I get the OPUS supply then I have to buy a 110 V to 12 V converter and figure out a way to set up a disconnect from the car battery (where the OPUS wires into). Now I can use the original external AC-DC converters that came with the case and the display. I would still have to buy a supply for the display.

    The case with the internal DC-DC supply and the external AC-DC converter was $70 + $90 for the 12V regulated supply is $160, still less than the OPUS and I keep the ability to supply from 110V mains.

    I'll check with the company on the input range to make sure. I got the 11-16 number for a similar supply from their website.

    Well, it is 11-16 V input range. So I guess this may be a problem. I am going to do some more research on this. I need the supply badly.

    If anyone has any info on getting a 12V 5A supply with an input range wider than 11-16 volts, I'd appreciate knowing.

    Just put a tank circuit in the line to keep up your 12v in. Wide-range supplies like what you want are hard to find (hence why people are trying to build their own)

    If you have some electronic knowledge, you could take the 12V rail from my design for the "Big Cahoona AT/ATX DC-DC power supply" and use it for the input to the ITX. It'll handle 5-30V DC input.

    12V/5A supply found!

    Don't know if that little bit would help or not...

    The supply from Lind Electronics is the same. It says 11-16 on the specs, but according to a sales guy there, it actually cuts out at 10.5 VDC low end.

    The price is the about the same too (65GBP 100USD), shipping should be less (for US customers anyway) as Switched Mode is in the UK and Lind is in Minnesota.

    I'm still not decided on what to do. I'm looking into BCheese's "Big Cahoona AT/ATX DC-DC power supply"

    Just had a quick look at this PSU, and must admit, I'm struggling to follow it!!

    Does the 12V rail come from the 5 - 12V SMPS on the Si138????
    If so, it's only rated at 500mA, not 5A.

    If this is wrong and this PSU will produce 5A, what would be the apporx component cost of building the 12V rail of the supply?

    OK, the only area you need to look at is the Si9138, and the associated components around the MOSFETs Q1201 and Q1202. Give me a few hours and I'll simplify the circuit for you, so that you only see what you need.

    It will be capable of up to 15Amps (potentially even more) on the 12V.

    I haven't finished costing the entire design yet, however I feel that the 12V only section would be under $50AU.

    Once I have a propper costing, I'll be posting it in the forum for the design, but I would be willing to post a revised cost for just the 12V rail here as well.
