    Weird power problem

Not sure why. But My PC wont power in the car anymore. I just brought it to my work bench and it powered fine. Im using an inverter and that seems to turn on. But when power the, the lights come on for a split second and it shuts down. Anyone have any idea why this would be happening? Its been fine for the past month.

The inverter is done.... Go for a DC to DC solution.... my has worked for 6+ years no trouble.

Are you saying the inverter turns on but then it shuts off

    or

The PC powers up briefly they shuts down while plugged into the inverter?

Does the inverter work with anything else plugged in?

Did you change the PS when you took the PC to the bench?

(sorry I originally read the inverter lights went out)

Well, just hooked it back up to the car and nothing. Maybe I was wrong but I never actually saw the PC power up B4. All I saw were the lights to my Lilliput, which is powered by my PC light up for a split second and then turn off. But I just plugged a portable light into the inverter and it worked fine. And no, PC on work bench is exactly the same as it was in the car. Weird.

Maybe you are getting a voltage drop at a poor connection to the power side of the inverter that is taking it below it's allowable voltage.

The drop will increase with more load like the pc versus the portable light.

Thanks for your reply. I assume your suggestion is to check all connections. Kinda reminds me, I was driving in Brooklyn on Friday night, lots of bumpy roads, right before this happened. I pray this is the reason why. Never realized how much of an incovenience it was to troubleshoot a car pc.

    I agree with Truckin' mp3

It's got to be your power inverter, my first revision of my system had a power inverter. it did the same thing, I'd be driving for a bit and then the pc would turn off. I started to troubleshoot the pc only for it to turn out to be the inverter. I switched to a dc-dc solution and I'm never going back. It even turns the machine on and off for me.

If the PC works inside (you say it is fine on the bench)
But not in the car, check all the the differences between the car set up and the bench.

That means power wires, monitor (if it did not go to the bench with the PC) and the inverter.

Yep, for example, is the PSU you are using on the bench the same one that is in the car?

Use a meter to check the voltages coming out of the inverter, then go to the first place it has an opportunity to fail, either a connector or the PSU. Confirm that it works and move your way along the harness until you get to the PC. Make sure you check the plug from the PSU and look at the pins in the power plug to the motherboard to ensure they aren't corroded or loose.

If everthing looks good, check to see if your power on switch is working properly. In fact, check that first since it is probably one of the differences between your bench and car.
