    M2-atx #2

My first m2 had no power on the 3.3v and 5v rails. got the new psu in friday night and installed it today. now i have the same problem. my fan lights up but my hard drives get no power(5v laptop drives). initially, the mobo light came on so i tried resetting the cmos. when i connected the power wire back to the battery and the power back to the psu, only the fan came on. both times i can hear the amp turn on as well.

im at a real loss. i dont understand what is going on. specs are in my sig. im using 2 laptop hdd's and 2 usb connections. i have the power, ignition, and ground all connected to the psu correctly.

    i really don't want to

I have the same problem... Searched the forum, found that the m2-atx seems to have a timing issue with some motherboards. It sends the signal to turn on the computer too early that the computer didn't have time to "warm-up" yet. Supposely they just fixed that this year and newer models of m2-atx shouldn't have the problem (although I think a few people still responded they did). If it's new and not a used one, I guess you can try contacting them to see if u can get the model with the fix (or maybe the fix didn't work for ur motherboard). Some people just quit and brought a DSATX or OPUS instead. There's a fix if u have the older model, but it seems to be too hard for me to do. You'll have to do a search for that one, I don't remember the post.

Your P4 is drawing too much on the 12v rail during boot. Very common problem. I bet If you hook either of your m2s up to a low consumption board they will work fine. I was just about maxing an m2 out with a 1.6Ghz p4. I had a multi meter hooked up and it was near the threshold so Im sure you have too much hardware for 1 m2 to handle. My suggestion, use both m2's, one to run the processor and mobo, and the other to run everything else. You just need to splice the green wire on the output side to make them run in tandem. There is also a thread here about using 2 in parallel. That or get a PS with a higher output rating.

Agreed. I ran a M2 with an AMD processor and system that technically met M2 power specs, but the M2 suffered a failure. As you can read elsewhere on the forum, when the M2s fail when approaching their rated maxiumums, they seem to frequently kill the motherboard, hard drive and other connected equipment as a result. That very thing happened to my system: my screen, HD, MB, processor, and RAM all died as a result, and with no warning whatsoever.

So, after reading many similar stories here on the forums, I decided to go with a DSATX when I replaced my computer. Currently, the DS-ATX is running a 2.0 Ghz P4 in a Dell GX240 minitower case (well, what was a case) with an ATI PCI graphics card, Lilliput screen and approximately 5 USB peripherals with no issue. In addition, the DSATX has significant overload and overvoltage protection designed into the power supply, so if output begins to drop because of overloading, failure of the power supply does not kill the connected components.

If space is not a concern, then I would seriously consider the DSATX...in my opinon, the extra money is well worth the added protection.

The first time I've used the M2 I got the same problem. In my case, the problem was the cable, too small to carry the current required by the PIII and the hardware.

Maybe you can try a bigger cable to power the M2, directly to M2 starting on the car's battery.

    bye
