Powering a USB hub - an idea

Can anyone tell me if this would work:

I run a USB hub using a cable like this:

One usb plug going to the PC, the other going to this:

Would this work in providing the additional power needed to run an external DVD drive and external HDD?

The USB is only going to draw enough power for a single USB port. If the devices on the USB hub draw more than would be allocated for a single USB port, then it's not going to work.

I see, thanks. Is it safe to use that cable on the DVD drive only then? Does the device only draw the required power, rather than it being pushed (potentially too much causing damage)

I'd think it would, but I have no way of knowing for certain.
