The USB is only going to draw enough power for a single USB port. If the devices on the USB hub draw more than would be allocated for a single USB port, then it's not going to work.
Can anyone tell me if this would work:
I run a USB hub using a cable like this:

I see, thanks. Is it safe to use that cable on the DVD drive only then? Does the device only draw the required power, rather than it being pushed (potentially too much causing damage)
