    Cheap PAC TR7 startup/shutdown controller

I am surprised that I haven't seen any posts about using a TR7 as a startup/shutdown controller. I had an extra one laying around so I thought I would see if had a function to do something like this and it does. Function 9 takes a constant voltage and after a 5 second delay sends a short pulse that can trigger a relay hooked up to your power button. It will also send another pulse 5 seconds after a constant voltage is lost to shutdown your PC.

I only configured mine to startup my laptop and I use Shut Down controller software to shut down when on battery power.
I have been using this setup for a week and it works flawlessly for me. Although if your car has a voltage interruption between accessory and ignition then this may not work for you.

does this work on a "normal" motherboard with windows XP running?

I mean, does windows shut down, or do you simply shut down the PC, and if so, doesn't that give trouble by startup (errormessage that windows didn't shut down correctly or something like that)?

It'll work to switch anything through a relay. It's just a timer.

there are better, more reliable power-on solutiobns for PCs.
Perhaps not as inexpensive (I don't know how much the PAC TR7 costs), but more reliable.

    That part I understood.

I was wondering if Windows doesn't make a mess of your system stability if you shut down through hardware without using the windows-system-shutdown, and if windows starts up afterwards without the whole system-check messages and so on

Yes, Windoze will throw up errors if you do a hard shut down. Yes Windoze can corrupt data if you do a hard shut down.

That's why there are PC SSDC units, so Windows will do a proper "graceful" shutdowbn, close all files that need closed and prevent such problems.

This doesn't cut the power, it just pushes the power button and lets your system shutdown/startup.
Free software shutdown controller makes sure you do a clean shutdown/standby.
TR7s go for about $20 so that makes them a very cheap alternative. I've been using mine for a few weeks flawlessly.
