Lightbulb Calling all people for information!

Hey everyone, I think that it would be neat to have a website that will list some of the information that we have compiled here that would be of good interest. Things that I'm talking about are:

    1) What power supplies are available, their specs (total and per-rail), their uses, their pros and cons, the cost and where to get them, the sizes, any details that can be provided.

    2) What people are using, problems that they've faced, how they fixed them

    3) Any in-depth details that people might have about the power supplies or power requirements of their systems (any measurements that they've taken, etc).

Also, if people can give the system that they have set up (i.e. all the details, anything that is drawing power from the PS) and the ratings of the power supply (i.e. not only total wattage, but how much the PS can put out on each of the rails) that would be great.

Additionally it might be cool if we could index what cars people have and what they've installed and how they've done it, so, for example, if someone has a Civic and wants to install something, they can easily look up a list of people with that car and see what they've done.

I think that if we could compile this information into a sort of FAQ it would be very useful to newcomers as well as many old timers here I suspect.

So, tell me what you guys have, and I'll throw it up on a site and/or put out a FAQ

I don't have any details about my system yet, but as soon as I do I will post them.

If you want to build an info page, by all means, run with it. Ideas/proposals to build a repository/faq for mp3car knowledge have come up a number of times now, with nothing really ever happening. And as far as the make/model/equipment page, someone runs one now (tho i cant remember who) that also includes location.

well don't condemn me before I get a chance to do anything

So if people can provide me with information specifically like I requested, I'll throw it up on a page and then expand it as time goes along. Hey, if anyone wants to help, then feel free to email me because if we want to make it big, it's gonna take several people, and then we can start to divide things up.

But I think that it would be a great idea, and people look like they want it to happen, so lets get together and do it

I would love to see a site that does the following:

lists each major component you will need for a computer in your car. Such as, power supply/power inverters, motherboards, LCDs, and software.

If you start off with a simple list of each item you've found so far, and ask people for feeback (ie. is the information correct, did you miss an option), you'll probably get more useful information than if you just ask people to send you information..
See chuckyg.com for a list of my websites (and mp3 want list).

I'm building my first car-puter. Trying to decide on the best 12v power supply to use (since I don't want to use an inverter).. the rest will just fall in place later.

true.. but it would be easier to find if there was a nice over view.. who wants to read all the old threads when you can easily read an overview and decide on which ideas intrest you more?

jol: All of the information is available sure, but not only it is not easy to find, it is also very contested. For example, what is the best power supply to use? best computer setup? best mounting practices? all of these have been in longstanding debate, and it would take a very very long time to search through everything to find ALL that you want to know... It takes long enough as it is to figure out ONE aspect of the system, nevermind all.

chuckyg: that's exactly what I was looking at doing, however I am starting with power related because that's what I'm doing research into right now. I've got a few pages worth up but I'm still adding to it, we'll see soon how it all turns out.

what I'm asking for though is information that is not already available on the forum, like for people to get out the ammeters and check to see exactly how much power their computers take. Also to tell me exactly what hardware they are using, what power supply they have, what type of car they have and how they mounted everything in there.

Say that there's a newby with a civic, and he wants to know what his options are. It'd be great if we could have an easy-to-find index of people who have put carputers into their civics, so that the newby can easily find all of his/her options.

Plus it makes it easier on me instead of having to spend days searching around in these forums
