    Very new with powering questions

I have just begun my project for this and am still really confused on how to power the system. Ill admit I know computer hardware and software inside and out, but Im not real technical on the car side of all this. I have read multiple ways to power the system both in using an inverter and wring it stright to the battery. Upon consulting other more automotive savvy people I have been talked down from both methods of powering the system due to the drain on the battery. I currently drive a top of the line 1992 Mercury Topaz and probibly won't be getting a new car anytime soon. This is an idea that I had no idea was so popular but I guess I should have and found it here first to get my questions answered months ago. Sorry if this post is too "newbie" but I need a more professional opinion on this.

    So, what's your qestion?

For power, I recommend a DC-DC converter. Efficient, and more less likely to introduce noise into the system. Normally, the DC-DC is wired directly to the battery through a switch.

Inverters are fine, and can be connected directly to the battery. Again, using a switch to turn it on and off at the 12V side is necessary. You will quickly learn that "automotive technicians" know absolutely nothing about electronics, so don't listen to them. Wiring up an inverter to the battery is fine, as long as your alternator can support it. On most cars, the alternator is overrated for the application, so again you should be fine.
