    Two PSUs at once?

    Hello,

So I have an existing setup that works with an M2ATX, but I have a few more power requirements that I need to fulfill (external usb hubs and cdrom drive, etc).

I have an old M1ATX that is not being used, Is it *safe* if I wire this into my car to power USB devices and possibly a ATA cdrom drive? (Grounding points for both PSUs are the same).

I was just going to bridge the green wire to ground (to make the PSU think there was a motherboard plugged in)

I am thinking yes but was hoping to get a second opinion before I burn something up...

    Thanks,

As I have said many times in here- I am still pretty new to the art of building a computer into a car but I've been building computers in other things (sometimes regular cases) for years.

Using 2 separate power supplies in a computer was actually not uncommon a few years back: when scsi and then IDE RAID became somewhat popular with hobbyist types, but power supplies were still small. Add overclocking to that, and the need for many fans at times....

And connecting the green and a ground was the way we did it- soldering for a permanent connection, or with part of a paperclip for temporary use.

I do not know any reason to think this would be a problem in an automotive environment- you'll still have ignition power to turn the unit on/off, so won't drain the battery.

    Should be fine, I'd think.

I was almost positive that that was the case, thank you very much for the re-assurance.

Here's some stuff that people went through last year, applying similar ideas to the M2ATX.
    I don't see why it wont work with a M2 and a M1.

Just do not cross the 2 PSUs. If you use them separately, it is perfectly safe to use.
Use the main PSU to power the mobo and the other to power HD, usb ...

    Thanks MatrixPC,

What do you mean by cross?
Can you give me an example?

    Thanks

Let say the mobo you have using standard 20 pins ATX and 4 pins, you can not use one PSU for the 20 pins and the other for the 4 pins. The reason is that within the mobo, 12V from 20 pin connection and 12V from the 4 pin connection are the same. If you connect 1 PSU for each of those 2 connections, different voltage between the 2 PSU will create problem because 12V from both of those connection could be electronically connected.

Again this is just an example but what exactly going on within the mobo is I don't know.

Oh wow, alright thanks. I will just be using the voltage from the M1 for USB and other external devices.

I think this illustrates what is technically going on when you cross them, the reason for precaution, and the only known exception.
