    Hibernation when driving... any ideas?

    Hibernation when driving

This is my first post, I just want to say that this site has been a dreat source of info and thanks!

Untill today ive had no major problems. Only installed carputer 2 days ago. 1st day no problem, second day it started going in and back out of hibernation while driving. i should mention i drive a taxi, and the problem only happens when im using my datahead (small computer type thing thats connected to my CB radio and gives me my jobs)

Im assuming its a power issue. There is no problem when datahead is of and only goes into hibernation when sending a command (ie. clear the meter - sends signal to base). I assume when my datahead/cb radio is sending signals its using more power.

So if i do something on my datahead with engine running, the pc goes into hibernation, there is a few thumps out of the speakers and the screen gets a little distorted at same time as thumps, happens for about 6-10 secs, by this time im in hibernation and about 5 secs later resumes. All is fine untill another command/signal is sent

I have noticed a whine from the engine bay when the computer is on, maybe this is something to do with it?

The thing that confuses me is if its a power issue surely it would hard of? not hibernate

My psu is a M2-atx. its set to hibernate afer 15mins and hard off after an hour

I ended up pulling the fuse and had to work with no sound, was well annoyed, im only home now but in the morning i will recheck all my wiring.

Any help would be very much appreciated

It doesn't sound like a power issue as, like you said, if it were a power problem, the computer would hard off and not hibernate.

To me it sounds like an issue with the ignition signal wire going to the M2. Where did you pick up the ignition wire to connect to your M2? It seems like the M2 is seeing the ignition wire go live then dead then live etc causing the computer to hibernate and resume because it thinks the car is being turned on and off.
I installed my carpc into my pet Kangaroo, mate.

    Cool Giving it a shot

Does the meter run off an acc line. If so the pulse from you clearing it(surge) could be causing the PSU to think you are shutting off the car-time to turn off- If it cuts at random I would check your wiring try running comp as a standard PSU (without auto-on/off) and see if it happens with no PSU interferance(<-spelling). That my shot in the dark

    Nislo you type fast.

I picked up the ignition wire from one of the cig lighters, they switch on and of with the ignition. I dont think this is the source of the problem as it's fine when my datahead is of.

Meter/cb radio/datahead/roofsign use one power line straight to battery, so is the pc and also the amp. 3 power wires.

Well today, i drove around for a while with no problems. Then tryed using the datahead and no problems when sending and recieving commands. So seems to have fixed itself. Although after sitting for a while (aprox 45 mins) a job came through and there was a slight pop and interferance on the lilliput (powered on m2-atx 12v rail), no hibernation. This only happened once today.

If it keeps happening i was thinking about a small seperate battery for the pc. What do you guys think? maybe im way off. Then there would be no feedback from the datahead

    Smile Well...

Since I run dedicated lines for my comp and use or don't use the auto on on the m4-atx (turn it on with a pwr button) I find the cig lighter pwr source as your problem or are you using it as the trigger? A seperate batt may solve your prob but, a cheaper maybe not easier solution would be to run a dedicated line for pwr and try a pwr button for on/off. I have thought of modding my work truck (company says no-no it carries haz-mat) and I can see how this can be annoying. Running new lines and a simple on/off cause you're in it all day(I'm guessing) wouldn't be to much of a hassle. Just saying cause another battery and keeping it charged could run into major money and other stuff. Hope this helped and good luck

I have a dedicated power for the computer, cig power for the trigger. Sorry if there was any confusion.

We will see howit goes over the next few days, fingers crossed it wont happen again.

If i was to put a second battery in would a smaller motorbike battery work? would there be enough power for the m2-atx? With a diode or relay so the smaller battery keeps its power

By the way this is what powering from it:
    Via M1000
    160GB IDE HDD
    USB Bluetooth
    USB Dlink radio
    Globalsat bu353 (in the post)
    OBDii connector (still to buy)
    lilliput 701

    Smile Not too sure?

A motorcycle battery would be fine but, I wouldn't put it in the pass. compartment (you prob. already knew that). As far as a way to keep it charged, I'd do some searching. I saw some discussion on the different ways others have done it. I would (if it were me) use an isolator. They are pricey but the ones I looked into would switch automatic to keep both batts charged. I'd look/search for tank circuits (I think) or isolators in the forums. Good Luck!
