ITX 60w DC-DC PS DOES IT WORK WITH YOUR CAR

I am thinking about buying a opus ps but can't afford it. I came across a cheap ps ITX 60w DC-DC PS will this work connected directly to the car. I know you need a 12v regulator for it and add a shutdown controller. The totals cost of the ps and controller would be $80.

second question will this ps power up the following all together:

    hard drive
    motherboard
    dvd drive
    wireless card
    gps
    tv tuner card

It *may* work... but I would not try it if I were you, it may cause your other components to burn out... there are many threads already on this topic, you can get all this info if you just do a search on that power supply unit.

(pls dont post in all caps)

    thanks

I was curious about using just a couple 12 volt regulators to protect the input from 14+ volts so I wired up two LM2940CT regulators in parallel (no caps). They seem to power the epia-M and a laptop hdd just fine and barely even heat up... Funny thing is, I tested the regulators at 12 volt input and they allowed only about 10 volts on the output but everything works just fine with the car off. Could the motherboard not even use 12 volts? Now when I try to start the car, it restarts my computer but I guess a big *** 12 volt capacitor would solve that problem right?

Sure hope I win the sproggy on ebay..

    Mike,
With those in parrallel did you have any problems running with the car off? Just the cut when you started?

I ask because thats the PS I will be using (believe it or not it will fit my needs better then an opus)
I am just concerned about the voltage so if wireing 5 of them together will allow the ps to get the 4.6 amps it needs and still run with the car off I will be set. I will be running a dual battery setup so the starting of the car won't effect me.

    thanks

yah, two in parallel works just fine with the car off.. I really dont think you will need 4.6 amps, that is just the max the power supply can draw. This will depend pretty much on what you are planning to use with your mobo... My harddrive runs off 5 volts and requires very little power and the motherboard only uses like 2 amps at 12 volts (going into this powersupply).

Well, I want to be sure I have all I need, I want to use a harddrive, dvd, and mobo with a usb controlled touch screen so all of those will be drawing power. I also have been reading some concerns on those power supplies struggling with the new epia-m mobo's and want to be sure I don't have problems in that aspect. I really don't want to have to move to a 2.5 harddrive which I read some people have to do using those supplies and an M series mobo.

Thanks for the info though, I think I might take the time and see if I couldn't integrate those regulators into a shutdown controller and kill 2 birds with one stone. Despite my lack of board experiance they look simple enough for me to handle.

    Thanks again

    Mike,

Have you had any success on the regulator/shutdown controller?
