    anyone attempted to make their own power supply?

    Yes some do, but most dont. It is cheaper and safer to buy one.

    I always make my own, never bought one:

    Original L296/7812 supply:


    First pass ISR supply (old EM-586 setup)


    Newer ISR supply (with shutdown controller)


    Latest ISR supply with shutdown controller, digital outputs, LCD backlight brightness controller and 3 servo controllers. Also very low standby current consumption.
    Old Systems retired due to new car
    New system at design/prototype stage on BeagleBoard.
