    DC DC PSUs?

So I don't get flamed: I tried searhing for this already just didn't really know what to search for.

I am priceing out a list of parts for my computer (so far have decided on a EPIA M-10000, 7" in dash screen w/ touch from digitalww, 20gig hard drive, and 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM, and a future dvd-rom). I'd like to get a Ops to power that bad boy up but, I'm on an incredibly tight budget. So my question is, what are some dc dc PSUs (opus, sproggy, etc) that are cheap, yet reliable?

You could try searching for dc-dc psu's on ebay. I think they have a 250watt psu going for about 100 now and I've seen many others also in the past. I'll check now and tell you if there are any others. You probably won't need 250watts with your setup so you should look for a different one.

I JUST found this 15 min ago. http://mini-box.com/pw-60.htm

Compact design, less cables. The PW-60 is the only cableless mini-atx power supply for the VIA platform. Compatible with an entire range of mini-itx motherboards such as VIA EPIA-V, EPIA-5000, EPIA-800, Lucky Star Mini-itx, FIC C3 933 the PW-60 provides cool, silent power for your small mini-itx board. Additionally, the PW-60 dc/dc converter can power your EPIA M 6000, EPIA M 9000 or EPIA-M 10000 or other VIA C3/Celeron boards by using a small ATX extension cable. Read more specs.
$50 for the power supply itself, $24(onsale) for a adapter to plug it into a wall, and they have a package for 69.

Anyone here have this? I am extremely tempted to buy it.

caution on that.. this power supply wasn't designed for directly wiring to your car, some people have had success using it that way.. others are warry of what may occur.

What sort of problems can occur from wiring this directly into the battery? It looks good, and like it could save some major space. It seems too good to be true...

the voltage may be higher or lower than your hardware is expecting generating unexpected, undesirable results anywhere from "brown out" to hardware damage

You could sove this problem by putting some sort of regulator in between the battery and PS right?

easier said than done. Search again for "ITX DC-DC" and read up on all the problems related with high power systems using that supply.

    1) Epia M1000's take more power than Epia 800 etc... Some boards would not boot up because of this

    2) A system of that spec would need probably two of those eden supplies, so you'll need to double the input requirements of your battery to psu regulators.

    3) Building a 12v @ >5A regulator is both expensive and difficult. So far nobody's found a reasonably priced off-the-shelf DC->DC power brick.

If you want to go with the specs you list, you'll need to cut them back a bit to fit under 1 psu:

Epia 800, or the low-end M board, 20gb (laptop) hard drive), stick with 256mb PC133 ram (uses less power than DDR), and seek out a laptop dvd-rom drive, or skip altogether.
