I feel very stupid - but I've just bought one and this question came into my head....
When I turn my ignition off, how does the M2 tell my PC to shutdown/hibernate?
as far as I can see - the only connection to the mobo from the M2 are the power cables themselves
now for power up I have my bios set to auto power on when power is detected.........or does the M2 do something fancy here too?

If the only connection to the mobo is the power cables themselves (20pin ATX and optionally 4pin P4 connector) then you installed it wrong and the M2 is doing nothing but essentially pulling the plug from the wall.Originally Posted by lewisdg

The ACPI power button is that button on the dash that you're pushing. The button that tells your motherboard to turn on/off regardless of whether or not it has power. That's why when your computer is plugged in at home, it isnt ALWAYS on, you can shut it off and turn it back on later without cutting the power completely.
ah ok.....so where currently I have a 'push' button on the front of my desktop....that leads to port/plug on the mobo.....?
the M2 will connect there instead and act as the push button to power on and off the pc??

Yep.
And optionally you can connect that pushbutton to the M2, since it is in parallel. So you can do it manually or have the M2 do it automatically.
