power supply idea, will it work?

UPS's take AC in, and charge a batter with it, then they take the DC battery current and convert it to AC, which goes out to your computer.

at what stage in there does the power get "cleaned" is it after the battery?

my plan is to buy a old UPS, with a dead battery(cheap) then open it up, and connect DC power directly to where the battery WAS hooked in.

so you use the UPS as an inverter and a conditioner... all for less than the price of an inverter since your buying something that generally has no value to the typical user.

    so... possible or stupid?

what is the best way to power a 300watt PSU from a 12v DC car battery? this method or skip it and just do an inverter? which I hear has dirty power... or will it be ok?

The post-battery side of an UPS is basicly just an inverter, so I think your idea is quite usable. Of course you'll need to find one that uses 12V lead-acid batteries for compatibility with your car...

Also prepare for some hacking because at least some UPS do not allow to power up without a line input. It's not likely that it will continue to work while cranking as well.

well, inverters are easy to find, so is there a benifit to using a UPS in this way to change the form vs a inverter.

or am I just sorta creating more work for no reason?

will a regular inverter work ok? just battery>inverter>PSU>computer.

is that ok? or does it NEED something to condition the input source?
