    Difference between M4 and DS

I am new to all of this and have been reading fairly extensively about what installing a car pc entails, but as far as power goes, I am a little confused.

The system I am trying to install is a P4 1.8 GHz, 1GB Ram, Nvidia FX5200 Windows XP

It seems like there are many power supplies that would work out for this setup. I'm considering the DSATX as well as the M4-ATX, but am open to all suggestions.

I don't really understand what the difference is between the DSATX and the M4-ATX. What power supplies is the easiest to install and use? Which one has the most stable performance?

I am certainly up to suggestions and any knowledge you wish to impart upon me.

    Thanks!

both will provide you enough power, and equally easy to install.
DSATX is more flexible, less buggy. If you read around, you'll all sort of problems with the m4.
Altogether i think the DSATX is a better PSU, but the M4 is cheaper.

M2 is one of the M-series manufactured by mini-box.com. IT has its own set of issues. Do some reading on the forums about those.

And the choice of PSU should be determined by the power draw of your PC hardware. Have you calculated that yet?

I used an online tool that said I should have a 286 watt power supply, but I thought that seemed high

Let's see what you've got working here...
    Power hungry P4 CPU...
    Power-hungry 3D video card...

Replace those components with more efficient (a.k.a. low-power) pieces, and you will have more options.
If you don't want (or are unable) to replace them, try an Opus 320 PSU.

as for power, the DS or M4 should work. When you use the calculator, they probably use max condition for all components and sum them all up. In reality this never really happens, but it is the safest bet. I know it'll work for your setup because I'm running a P4 2.4Ghz, ATI 7500 AIW, 512 MB ram , plus all usb ports...etc, just fine on my DSATX.
Though, i've recently pulled out the AGP graphic card because i found it totally unnecessary for carputer, and just add more unwanted heat.
