Yeah the inverter also adds noise, good point.

Really I don't think that it'd be worth it to gang up the group buy. It'll be more expensive simply because of the amount of shipping that'd be required. (and how did you arrive at the ~$94? What's the cable cost and shipping?)

Boy, someone has far too much time on their hands to have made up those wiring diagrams in word

Ouais, je sais que le taux en France est vraiment trop... C'est parce que toute les prix est "TTC" -- pour cacher le taux!

It depends where you are, but in Canada now we get charged the full Federal/Provincial taxes on import (at least in Ontario, that amounts to 15%)... I'm not sure what it is in the States.

Good point though, I forgot to factor in import taxes into my prices. d'oh!

I updated the information in the first post with more information from Arise (a whopping $2 discount for >10 units)

Here's what I heard back from MagicPower about the efficiency of their power supply vs that of Opus solutions'

The device that Opus Solutions provided is un-isolated type.
As it shows on the picture of PCB, there's no component such as transformer. The protection of un-isolated type DC-DC Power Supply is depends upon the basic protection those components (on PCB) used to have. The Efficiency for un-isolated type would be higher but might easily damage the system.
Which sounds interesting... If that is true, how does Opus' get the regulated 12V output? You don't need a transformer if you are doing only step-up or step-down, but since you need to be able to handle both for the 12V output how does it do it?

for the 12V they can do it like zootjeff

    Boost the 9...14V => 15V for exemple...

Then drop it to 12V => you don't need an transfo...

yeah I figured something like that, but is that any more efficient than using a transformer?

    that's only for the 12V...

For the +3.3V & +5V you can do it with a switching IC + inductor

Just to let you know that the Divx-car's group buy have already 19 buyers in one week ...

It is the MagicPower 120W, with cabling. Without sending cost to buyers, it is expected to be at 94$

The next limit is 50 pieces (we can dream) giving an extra rebate of 10$ ...

That's great, but unless you can reach the 50 piece mark, it's cheaper for us to do our own group buy.

As for the transformer, yes, I realize that's only for the 12V rail, but again, is using a step up and then a step down any more efficient than using a transformer?

I heard back from Arise again about pricing, what a joke...

    Arise said...
The power supplies sold in Taiwan do not included cable. We have a large overhead cost. Shipping, custom and cables are all included. This is a very reasonable price. BTW, please note that the manufacture lead time is around 2-4 weeks. Please check inventory with me, when you are ready to place an order.
MagicPower has told us that they try to maintain at least 25 units in inventory at all times, otherwise yes there is a delay. I also informed Arise that the cables are included for $2 more.

I am still trying to see if we can get a better discount out of Arise, but I don't think that they will budge. So it's looking like any bulk deal would be better to go directly to MagicPower rather than through Arise, although I will keep you all posted.

I would want the cables and all.
