# Thread: P2140 soldering help needed.

Got my P2140 in today and I need help figuring out where to solder the power wires to. Attached is a picture of my computer, where do I solder each of the the wires that came with the P2140 to the computer?
Also, how exactly does the wire connect to the battery? Do I just wrap one end around a terminal? Or do I need to attach a special connector to it?

2. Your power brick has a connector to the computer.
You'll want to cut that connector off and splice into it, so it will plug into the power port on the computer.
Alternatively, you can purchase a plug from an electronics shop or a second power brick to chop up.

As far as the wires to the battery, I suggest using ring terminals on the ends.

3. How many watts is that PC? Is the 2140 beefy enough to handle it?

It's 240W. I'm thought it would be ok, I did those calculations specified in the FAQ's and the wattage was within the parameters on each rail.
Why? Did I miss something?

"The P2140 provides two outputs. The primary output is jumper selectable for 12V, 18.5V, or 20V operation and can provide up to 11.3 amps (135 Watts) @ 12V, or 7.5 amps (150 watts) @ 20V."

240 watts at 12 volts is:
Watts = Volts X Amps

240 = 12 X A --> A = 20 amps

There's no rails on that power supply. It's just a cord that plugs into the PC.

Sorry, but now I'm confused. Did I buy the wrong PSU?

7. Which one do you have - the convertible minitower or the Business PC? I found this doc with quickspecs that say the Business PC psu is 135 watts, but that is max for the 2140. It will probably work but it is pretty close to the top of the range.

Of course, the pc probably doesn't draw max power most of the time, so it might be okay. Or it might last a little while and burn out early.

If it is the mini tower, I wouldn't use the 2140 with it. You're 100 watts or so short of what you need.

8. It's the Ultra-Slim Desktop series (sorry, the guy that I purchased it from had taken off the model number sticker for some reason), it's rated at 135watts.

9. I suppose as long as it isn't loaded down with power sucking stuff like multiple hard drives and honking graphics cards it will *probably* be okay. The 2140 is pretty sophisticated and will likely shut down if you over draw it. But make sure you fuse it properly, okay?

10. ^ Thanks for the help. I had a friend whose done stereo installs take a look at everything and he's confident he can install everything even though he's never done a carPC. Should go in this or next week, I'll keep you guys posted.

P2140 instruction manual says 15amp fuse, correct?
