    2 PS's in one Systems

    Hello All,

Well, after an incident that included the shutdown of my computer, and LOTS of smoke in the trunk of my car, it is time to upgrade to a new, well at least new for me, MB. I had already thought of this before, so I ordered Sproggy 2.8 kit from Mastero, but, I also have my original PS, which still appears to be fine, from the original setup. I have no shutdown controler, but, unlike th old setup, the new setup is an ATX board. I was hoping to use both PS's in the system, since in the past, I found that the Sproggy 2.0 PS wasn't buff enough for the old MB, associated cards, drives, and CD roms. I figure 2 PS's should cure that, but, I am trying to figure out how to wire the PS's. The 2.8 should be easy to do, since it should act like a straight ATX supply. I was thinking of taking one of the 12 volt lines out of the 2.8, and using that signal to energize the relay on the 2.0 PS, the one that is AT only. That way the ATX supply will control the AT supply, effectively making it an ATX as well. I am aware that relays cause spikes and other anomalies on the trigger wire, but, is that something I should worry about in this application. If so, anyone have any solutions, maybe a diode or something. The voltage drop accross the diode shouldn't change whether the relay enrgizes or not, and it should protect the ATX PS, but, the diode will generate heat, and may eat up to much current.

    Hmmmm, any help is appreciated.

    Thanx
    Michael

I see no problem in using two supplies when one is used for fans and such, but splitting other components along two supplies *could potentially be bad, because of slight differences in voltage causing slight differences in signalling, ie running the mobo off one supply and the hd off the other *could cause problems.

BUT, if the supplies are good quality and well regulated you might be able to get away with it just fine, but the problem here is, if this does cause problems, it could be intermittent, etc, and could potentially be really hard to track down problems related to it unless you suspect it in the first place.
