First let me say how glad I am to have found this thread, I have been researching many things for many weeks and just now ran across it. I am making a slightly different setup than most of you guys but its close enough.
I will be installing a PII-450mhz pc in my Blazer, I am almost finished with the plexi-glass case. Until my college budget can afford it I will be powering a 200w PSU with a 600W DC-AC inverter. From there I will be creating custom RS232, USB, etc. boxes for the front PAX and Rear PAX. Once again until I can afford any TFT display I will be completely controlling this using my Compaq IPAQ 3835 with a combination of a Winamp Server/Client, and VPN. I will also be adding at some point in the very near future a Kicker 450 (I think - friend giving it to me) amp along with a pioneere premier 12".
As for the PC boot/shut down I think i will have to live with simply cutting the power and doing reboots on power loss. I will be building a simple relay box/switch type deal to cut power to the hardwired inverter when the AC line goes dead .. or maybe a rocker switch haven't decided yet.
I really hadn't thought much about line noise until reading here (oops) what are your guys's suggestions or fears, im still building this so it hasn't even got in the car yet (wont have inverter till thur.) I will be using some sort of windows on the PC as of today 98se is out as it hates my IPAQ, would like to do linux but dont want to reload my IPAQ and i like the Winamp server.
Oh yeah I will also have my Magellan Meridian Gold connected directly to the IPAQ, unles I can find something better to do with it ..
Thanks in advance guysLooking forward to posting some pics with a final project soon (fingers crossed)

Well at least do you think I will need to add some caps within paralell between the inverter and the pc? Which ones? I have read on them, but can't find any rock-solid info.

The caps are used for a tank circuit. This would provide uninterrupted power during engine cranks. Its not necessary. Just turn the inverter on after the engine starts. You can make a delay circuit if you're too lazy to flip a switch.
But why all the trouble for an mp3 player? The IPAQ does more than the PC. You could just buy an mp3 player from the local car stereo shop. Sell/Trade the IPAQ for a screen. This would make things more interesting.
A challenging and fun project nonetheless. Good luck!

Yeah but the IPAQ I aleready have and use for school/military use. Second I have enough old PC mobo's laying around why not. Besides with a 40gig HD not only can I load it up with Music but I can also stream/play DVD's, and when I find a convienient interface allow my PAX to actually use the computer for computing/game purposes and with my IPAQ and a Wireless card surf the web !.
Oh yeah I can also hold a enormous map and topo database for my gps.. besides your right ,, its a project
My summer is too boring not to have one, so why not..
