Sounds like a cap going bad to me.
My carputer has been installed and fully functional since February...
about 3 weeks ago I turned it on and a very high pitched noise was coming from my center console. It lasted about 5 seconds then stopped.... wasnt sure if it was coming from the carputer or the PSu because they are next to each other but today I separated the two and its definately the PSU....
Its a Keypower 250W DC-DC
Its been getting progressively worse, sometimes it doesnt do it at all, sometimes 25-30 seconds....sometimes it wont stop at all and I restart a few times and it eventually stops...
What could be causing this? Is it fixable without having to replace the entire PSU?
Thanks

The magnetics in the supply can also vibrate creating audible noise if the switching frequency is right. You might be able to find the suspect part by touching the various coils with something insulated (or a dry wooden stick) to see if you can touch one and have the noise stop or at least change it. A dab of hot melt glue or silicone adhesive applied to that part might stop the vibration. Don't overdo it with big blobs of the stuff because that might affect cooling of the component.

Most likely its comming from an inductor, transformer or anything with a black metal looking object with wires around it =)
If it never use to make that high pitch noise then your PSU is about to blow, reminds me of the old CRT monitor about to pop.
Anyway as mentioned above by alanh, sure the noise will go away. Soon it may go away for good...thats when your PSU blows completely.
You really have to find out which component is causing this, may not be easy though and even if you did find it, it may not be that easy to buy a replacement.
bump
had the keypower out of commision for a while and was using a PW-70a. I just hooked it back up and it wasnt making the noise for 2 days or so, now it is again. Maybe somebody can give me new insight since the last post was 8 months ago

and another bump!
Was fine all summer, now its back. Highly annoying to listen to until it goes away which is anywhere from 10 seconds to several minutes.
Trying to avoid (or at least delay) because other than that, theres nothing wrong with this PSU. 250W, and it survives cranking. What more could I want!![]()
