    M4 Tried and true

I am going to start ordering parts for my build. It seems like the M4 is a tried and true PS. Anyone have any other recommendations or other things to look out for? For example i just found out that the M4 has a auto power on and power off feature based on the ignition switch on the vehicle.

Be aware the M4-ATX is a full size ATX power supply that is bigger than some complete MiniITX systems.

You MAY be able to get by with the M2 or M3 depending on what you are using and they are MUCH smaller.

Also realize that others have had serious noise issues with the M4-ATX and have had to resort to modifications to make it work for them.

All of these similar supplies have similar support. I believe I have the M3 and it has an ignition trigger as well. When I turn on the ignition it will boot up the machine. When I turn off the ignition it will shut down dependent on the time value I set via a jumper. I think I currently have it set for 2 hours. This allows me to go into the store and the PC is still running so when I come back it doesn't take anything to turn it on since it is already on. You can set it to use your ignition like a power switch but you will want some delay to get beyond the starting otherwise it may shut off while you are starting your car. I plan to have the screens tied to the ignition so they are on when the ignition switch is on otherwise they are off. I may provide an override switch so I can power up the screen when the vehicle is off.

dude, do NOT buy that PSU! i had it, and i dont even use it anymore. despite the fact , that it kills all FM and GPS transmitions near it, unless you build a scpeciall cage for it (wich takes up place), in my case, (and not only) it was inducing great load of noise in the system (sound and video) !! i dont know if all M4 are like that, but you can look here : http://www.mp3car.com/power-supplies...erferance.html for some other peoples suggestions!!

Love my Opus 250 power supply. It's not tiny, but I've never had an issue with it.

What will be my power requirements?

The CPU is 65 watts and i am using two Solid state hard drives in raid 0. I dont see any power requirements for the mobo or ram. You guys would know more than me on this.

thanks for all the info so far.

You know that is a standard mainboard not mini-itx it will use a little more power than a mini-itx type. No idea what it will suck. SSD's don't take alot of power and that cpu is at max usage to draw 65w. SNO
