    Random Restarting

I've had my Carputer running for a while now, but one problem that seems to plague me and continue, is that the computer seems to just restart randomly. I've tested it and narrowed it down that if I just stay in the bios or something it won't do it, it just seems once Win98SE starts up it just decides to restart.

The reason I'm posting in here is I feel it might be a power issue. I'm running an Opus 90 watt with everything hooked up and running good (otherwise it wouldn't even turn on here). Here's the specs of my system:

    Asus K7M Mobo
AMD 850 MHz Slot A Athlon
    192 MB SDRAM
    20 GB HD
    Voodoo3 3000 AGP
    Onboard sound

Wondering if this is an issue with Win98SE or if it's something with the PSU or mobo or what.

    Any help is appreciated!

Check your grounds, this happened to me with a home computer, it would restart randomly the MB wasn't properly grounded to the case.

Even if the MB is grounded correctly to the case check ALL other grounds the blip in the power is commonly due to grounds.

Make sure you check for virus. There was a virus last month that put Windows in a restart loop.
I forgot what the virus called, but it affect ALL version of Windows.

Yeah I was thinking it was more of a power issue, so might be the grounds. I have the ground wire hooked up under the seat of the back seat to the seatbelt bolt. So it should be good.

Edit: If you're talking about the motherboard grounds, I don't know, I have the motherboard in a plexiglass case that I personally made. I've never really heard of having the mobo grounded? But yes I do have the PSU grounded pretty good I think.

As for Windows, I have all the updates, but I'm going to move to WinXP in a little bit anyway.

I know what you're talking about for that virus too, and no I don't have that because it only effected WinXP computers and certain other ones, but not Win98.

A little more detail, I'll be just booting up the computer, and suddenly the screen will go black (monitor doesn't shut off), and it will restart.

Well in all the computers I've built the MB was grounded to the case

My friends computer was doing the same thing, randomly restarting, and we took apart the comp and I saw that the washers used in between the MB were plastic so put metal ones in and the problem was solved.

Does sound suspicious too because you say you have a plexiglass case. hmmm do you have a full size MB?

I had this problem once, it was heat related, the processor was overheating. Especially since you are using an Athlon, make SURE that the thing is well ventilated.

EDIT: I just re-read your system's specs. That seems like an aweful big load for a 90w power supply. I now change my bet to the PSU being the cause . but check the heat thing anyways

yo pienso que es muy poco 90watts para una sistema asi con voodo3 y un athlon 850

    i think that 90watts its less that this sistem need voodoo3 +athlon 800 is 80 watts +-

maybe you can try a more powerfull 120v psu plugged in at your house to test it, if it stays on then you know its because your not getting enough power
