    Laptop PSU Solution Complete and Bench-tested!

    I didn't like the idea of running numerous USB peripherals from the laptop power, so I decided to use a powered USB hub. I also had an external DVD drive in a USB case to power. So, I purchased a Laptop DC PSU from Ebay ($25), removed the case, and installed it in a Radio Shack project box along with a PW-70A, an ITPS, a 60mm fan, 2 fuses, and a 12V relay. Total 140 Watts of power.

    I wired up dedicated plugs for each device from the PW-70A outputs. The neat part is I was able to solder to the numerous adapter plugs that were included with my laptop DC PSU instead of cutting plugs off my AC supplies, or hunting down the right ones at Radio Shack. I did have to drill out ONE to fit the USB hub though.

    The laptop will sit under the passenger seat on the dock, and the remote switch wire from the PW-70A will power both the Laptop (via the dock switch)and the Lilliput off/on. The laptop itself is still removable from the dock without unplugging anything! Everything will be jacked into the dock itself.

    Thanks to Ricky327, Shakes, Frodobaggins, and everybody else that helped me get this far. Now to get this all in the car! (Forgive my enthusiasm, but I live for projects like this!!!) - OH, and yes I will be drilling some strategically placed exhaust holes in the case somewhere.

    Cool stuff, nice to see my name there too

    So did you connect the relay to give you an unregulated 12V supply for your laptop? through a 12V-laptop adaptor of course, and still squenced by the ITPS?

    Yup worked great thanks!! (Relay draws 65 mA)

    I was going to take it to work, set it up on the adjustable DC PS, and turn down the input voltage until something exciting happened, but I just let the magic smoke out of the Laptop PSU. I was dinking around inside securing some wires and vibraproofing with hot melt glue when it happened. After inspection, it looks like I sliced a little too deeply into the insulation of the input while removing that molded-on strain relief thingy, and it happened to become perfectly aligned with the heatsink and shorted. Took out a little transistor, and locked the output at 14.4 V regardless of the switch position . Of course I can't read the markings on the transistor anymore so i can't replace it. Oh well, I'll have to buy another off Ebay for $25. I'll read the new transistor and try to repair this one when I get it.

    Too bad...

    I have learnt my lesson well by being very carefull with high current/voltage stuff, they are prone to smoke up easily.

    Let us know when its all fixed

    Eh, no biggie. I'm an electronics tech so I fix the smoked stuff every day. I just wish I was an engineer instead. Making stuff is so much more fun than fixing it.
