    One question about tank

I'm pretty sure i've got the concept of the Tank circuit down. I'm using the attached schematic, I'm sure most of you have seen. My only question is, how do you mount it? Once i get everything wired and soldered, do i have to put it in special casing. Is this the best order for my parts?

    Battery ->Tank ->12 volt regulator -> PW 70a

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as things are starting to get closer and closer to install.

Pudge you have been around and must have read about the 1F tank circuit about a million times now

    1 Farad CApacitor Tank?

But by all means have a try doing it...I know it may be a waste of time but sometimes its good playing around with things, what work and what doesnt. But report back and let us know though

Yea, I have read a lot about people attempting the 1F caps and Sigmas short answer, "no" =). But I checked out the number on that cap and didn't realize it was 1F. What size capacitor works best for a tank.

    "didn't realize it was 1f" oops, my bad it's not. it's a 2200uf

I am sure you can build something to keep the computer running durining cranking but if you want a different option try to google XStatic BatCap

Ha you're funny. I'm not paying ~200 bucks so my PC can survive a crank, especially when I can solder something up quick and easy. I just need to know what rating can hold a charge for my PC for a few seconds.

Edit: A 50 farad cap, DANG.
Another Edit: Now I read that capacitor tanks aren't reliable, hmm. What to do.

50F will give you 22sec crank

replace the cap in your circuit with a small lead-acid battery.

Well, there are plenty of people around here now who will insist that a capacitor based tank circuit will not work, but all those same people admit to never having tried it themselves. The cap tank circuit concept was thought up by some of the early members of this board who aren't around anymore to explain why or how it works, but they did know what they were doing.

The fact is that my Sproggy uses two 2200uF capacitors on it's input side, and it does survive a crank. Whether or not it works for you will depend on many factors including the efficiency of your PSU, the current draw of your setup, and the health of your car's electrical system.

none, You have given me hope. how do you have those caps hooked up? just

    BAT---DIODE---CAP---CAP---PSU?

I'm willing to give it a shot to be honest, what is your diode number? I'm considering MBR 6045.

Rat Shack has 2200uf caps, but there is a 35 V and a 50 V. Let me know please, and I'll give it a try. How would i put this in my case BTW?

It's only in the very beginning of cranking the cap is needed, unless your battery really sucks
