    Is my PSU kaput?

    Hola

Maybe this is gonna reflect some lack of technical knowledge, but I just plugged in my Morex DC2DC PSU to my car battery.

At the two pins of the inputs, I test with my multimeter, and it says 11.90V.

What I wanted to accomplish was to test if the 12V out was really 12V out or was it something else if I started the car.

To my surprise.. I plugged in the ground terminal of the monitor to one that labels GND and the red terminal to +12, and I get 0 DC reading. I put the red terminal to +5, and +3.3 also I get 0 DC reading.

If I put the black multimeter terminal to the input ground, and red multimeter terminal to any of those output pins, I still get 0 DC reading.

    Is my PSU kaput?

Or is it because I did not connect any of the terminals to the motherboard, thats why there's no voltage? cause theres no load? I dont have a motherboard yet.. only a PSU. Thats what I wanted to test first.

Most ATX PSUs do not output any power without a motherboard being plugged in and turned on from the motherboard.

However, you can trick it Connect a piece of wire from the green wire in the 20-pin ATX power block to any black. If you hold the connector with the wires away from you, and with the clip facing up, the green wire should be the 4th from the left on the top row. Sometimes it is grey, just to confuse you Connect that wire to any black, and the PSU should power on and give out power

    That is a relief! Thanks!

Can I have a second opinion on this just to confirm?

I will try the green/grey wire trick sometime, but I'm just afraid I'll blow a capacitor or something =P

I cant wait to get my mobo back, it went back to customer support because the sound didnt function.

I have done this countless times, on countless power supplies You should be fine Just make sure you don't short out any other wires
