I think the device you are refering to is called an inverter (coverts 12vDC to 110VAC) it should work barring any noise like my inverter produces. I have a laptop I was going to use temporarily but the inverter noise was unbearable.
ok, I'm going to be permantently mounting a laptop in my car, and have seen the cigarette lighter adapters that adapt into two or three normal ac wall plugs. Is this the best way to power laptop + liliput screen, and possibly a usb hub? This would be a perfect solution as my computer will wake up when it recieve's power from the outlet, and shut down automatically once it's running on battery for a number of minutes.
thanks

At work we've been using an after market power unit called "iGo", it comes with adaptors for all manner of laptops as well as connectors at "the other end" for a car cig lighter, plane and regular socket. If I were using a laptop I'd probably go that route, for now though I have a desktop style PC.
http://www.igo.com - I have no affiliation whatsoever.
You can also charge a cell phone off a plug that is on the cable, with the right adaptor.
ya, we sell the igo at work. Problem is I have one cigarette lighter plug and the need for three devices to be powered. And i seriously doubt the hub is gonna have an adapter. Noise shouldnt be a big deal as i play my stereo loud, and I'll mount it preferably in the trunk.
Eh... when I say noise I mean signal noise. If you turn your stereo up, the noise gets louder too. It dosn't see to be a problem for everyone though.
I doubt the inverter is noisy, they tend to put noise into the circuits and you can hear it through the stereo, especially if you feed audio from the PC to the stereo.Originally Posted by bud_d
You can get cig lighter splitters, sounds like you need 110v though? What is the hub, USB? Check what USB devices need to be powered - can you hang them straight off the laptop? You might also want to look at a PCMCIA USB card, I'd think that would get power from the laptop.... maybe?
I see that the company is called IGo, but I see no products called IGo. Which product specifically are you talking about?Originally Posted by ukchris
I used the juice thing, seems the PowerExtender is similar.Originally Posted by slffl
