Using Lilliput Egg to power HDD

Can this be done? I have an ITPS + PW70a and have disabled ITPS regulation because it is useless in car environment. Can I use the Lilliput egg to power both the LCD monitor and 3.5" HDD?

Forget it - hdd uses around 15W, lcd 9W - egg thing rated at 1A. So unless anyone knows how to modify this to raise upto say 2-3A - its a no go.

The egg is a linear regulator. To get 12V out, the source must be 12+V. That won't work well if the engine is NOT running.

since i beleive the itps has to have a constant 12v or more to regulate and send out 12v, with out 12v it will shutdown the computer, also when you crank in most cars, the voltage dips below 12, thus not surviving cranking.

If the voltage to your computer drops below 12V when you crank, then so will the voltage to your cigarette lighter. Everything in your car gets its power from the same place.

But if you look at the description of the ITPS that mp3car sells, item #2 should cover your problem. Your computer won't be on while cranking... if you want your computer to be on before you start your car and survive cranking, then you will also need a tank circuit.

"The ITPS performs several timing routines and takes actions as follows:
    1) Ignition=OFF. Nothing happens.

    2) Ignition=ON. ITPS waits for 3-4 seconds then turns on the main 12V rail. This provides enough time for battery levels to reach a stable output. After another 1 second the MCU sends an "ON" signal to the motherboard via the 2 wires connected to the motherboard's ON/OFF pins. The motherboard will turn ON and your system should start booting.

    3) Ignition=ON during driving: Nothing happens. Your computer will remain ON.

    4) Ignition=OFF. IPTS waits for about 5 seconds and then it turns the motherboard OFF by sending a signal to the motherboard's ON/OFF switch. Your computer should turn off gracefully (shutdown procedure). During this time, power will still be available for your PC to perform shutdown.

    5) Ignition=OFF after 5 seconds. Power will still be provided for another 45 seconds, long enough for most soft shutdown processes. In the event where the shutdown process is hanging, power will be shut down hard, turning off your computer's main power source to prevent battery drain.

    6) ITPS will go to step 1, until ignition is tuned ON again."

Itps is useless because it drops your voltage by approx 1.5V no matter what. With lights, aircon and when you cold start - your (mine anyway) car voltage is around 12-13V - meaning reboots because the ITPS is regulating down to around 11ish and so the hdd does not get enough power and reboots. Turning ITPS regulation off gives alot better results but provides nothing in terms of protection - as has been discussed in numerous threads.

I am not worried about cranking - computer will not be on. It is only regular driving.
