my carputer is up and runing

i have every thing working now but i had to make a change to the diagram a little this one is better and it works any way if anyone would like to see i will make a new schematic of what im using i would still like to build a nother one that has a timer but in the mean time this work exalent no hanging turn the key computer and amplifiers work and 2 5 inch lcds turn the key off and it proceeds to shutdown onece it has it turns itself off
i hooked up a inverter to a home computer atx power suplly and through that i connected the laptop ,12 v 2 lcds 12volt all through the power supply witch also runs the 3 1/2inch hard drive that i made a 40 pin to 44 pin cable to adapt to the laptop i will now take some pics and post them soon

    1. The diode at the relay coil reverse connected.
There will be no current flow at the relay coil because of the diode, means the current will flow through the diode instead of the coil.
    3. Current path missing: please explain at that drawing, how the current will flow from +ve battery through the relay coil.
    1) Thanks for pointing that out! I'm still learning this stuff... Taking that into account, are the LED's backwards as well?

    2) ??

    3) I posted the rest of the drawing on here somewhere... Oh - here it is! (sorry about pwning your screen's realestate..)

Gotcha. (keep in mind, i understand how diodes work, just don't know proper diagramming techniques) The side with the bar (|) is the cathode. Cool - so i flip the diode and the LED's and that would be proper. Thanks!
Unfortunately, my trial of SmartDraw expired, so that's that, I guess...

Well, I hate to do it, but I have to revive a very old thread back from the dead

I made the circuit described in this thread, and it all works flawlessly. I used three 2200uf caps, and it gives me two minutes and thirty-two seconds (2:32) worth of time before it shuts off the relay.

But, my issue is my inverter. When everything is plugged in, and I start my car, my inverter cant handle the crank very well, and my computer doesnt get passed the bios (post) screen and it locks up cold.

So what I need to do is make a delay of about 4 or 5 seconds before the circuit gives power to the inverter. That way the car will be fully started before everything kicks on. That would solve my problem. But, I dont know how to do that

Does anybody have any ideas or insight on how to fix this?

I greatly apreciate any help or comments... Thanks In Advance!

Use a timer on the input to the 30-amp relay... Lots of info about them out there on the web. Some of these circuits might help. You're looking for one with an output of OFF, time delay, then On... I'm sure someone's diagrammed that somewhere. http://home.cogeco.ca/~rpaisley4/LM555.html

I found a power on delay circuit with some caps and resistors, but for some reason it doesnt work like the description reads

    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep....htm#delay.gif

Can anybody give me some advice on how to use this? I wired it in, from what I understand, to be the right way, and it only works for about a half a second. When I used a bigger capacitor (6800 micro farad) the delay is about 40 seconds. I wired an LED to test and see the power delay output, and the LED doesnt turn on and off like I think it should. It turns on but verry sloowly... And slowly turns off.... Is that the way it should work?

Thanks in advance for any advice. I apreciate it.

    Hi Mate,

Did you make the circuit diagram with corrections as posted by lexanite (i.e. the 03-09-2006 10:30 PM post)?

    Cheers,

    Scott.

Yep, sure did. Like I said the shutdown works perfectly, but I need a delay of some sort.

I ended up fixing it all. I used the start up delay I posted above and used that on a trigger relay that powers the shutdown controller...

Now I have Key>5 Second Delay> PC Powers Up|Take Key Out>Inverter Stays On For A Few Minutes>Computer Completely Shuts Down>Inverter Dies

All is perfect, and working very well...
