    Problem with ITPS / hibernation and External USB HD

    I have a PW70A and an M10000.. My system has a 10gig boot drive hooked up to MB and connected to the PW70A.. Everything seems to run fine while booted.. All music is on a 40 gig 2.5 HD in a USB drive enclosure.. This HD runs completely off one USB connector, which is connected straight to the USB on the MB... When booted everything runs fine and when I kill power the ITPS properly shutsdown the machine and kills power to the 12V rail like its suppose too... Then I added this external usb HD, which also runs fine while the machine is running, when when I kill my car the monitor instantly loses its signal, the MB appears to still be running for the 45 seconds until the ITPS kills the power rail, but my machine did not shutdown properly.. If I unplug the external HD before I cut my car off, it hibernates perfectly.. So somthing with killing the power and sending the hibernate signal from the ITPS when there is an external USB 2.5 HD hooked up causes the whole system to just instanstly shut down... Any suggestions? I figured the external HD is only pulling 5V and more than factors into my Wattgage setup in range of the PW70A.. I am lost...

    Here is my complete setup....

    M10000, Powered by ITPS/PW70A, 1 2.5 HD connected to PW70A, 1 Slim DVD connected to PW70A, MB has 4 usb ports... USB touchscreen connected 1 port, External 2.5 HD connected to other...4 port USB Powered hub connected to the remaining 2 onboard USB ports (using one for the power), Power Extreme Radio connected to HUB, Dlink USB Ethernet connected to the hub.

    I calculated the wattgage and it is under 60W off power which should run fine, but maybe it has too do with too many amps on the 5V rail...

    New Test Ran: I unhooked all other USB devices... My system was just M1000, 1 2.5 HD hooked direct to PW70A, 1 slim DVD hooked direct, and my usb HD plugeed directly into M1000 with no other usb devices... Car boots up fine.. USB HD works fine.. When I kill ACC the computer instanstly shuts off, but there is still plenty of Volts coming from ITPS to PW70A.. My USB HD still has its lights on, but the video is killed instanstly and the machine never hibernates/shutdowns.. Then the ITPS correctly kills the power after about 45 seconds and all MB fans stop and so forth.. I then plugged all USB devices and hubs back in, except the USB HD and booted up, ran perfect, killed ACC, machine properly hibernates, then ITPS kills power.. Turn back on and get a perfect re-entry from hibernation and all works perfect...

    Basically if I plug a USB 2.5 HD into my usb port on my M10000 with a ITPS and pw70A it is unable to hibernate/properly send the shutdown signal before the PC dies and after you kill ACC the system video disappears... Hasanyone used an external USB HD with a PW70A? I don't understand since its a standard 5V USB 2.0 devices? I don't understand how when its plugged in and you kill ACC, but the ITPS is stilling giving power to the PW70A how the computer instanstly kills video and doesn't shutdown...

    I rewired the power in the car and I seem to be getting better results... First my battery was getting pretty old, so I went and got a new battery... I then ran a direct line from the battery through a 20 amp fuse with 12 Gauge wire to the ITPS and everything seems to work fine.. I only tested for a few hours, but seems much better and actually works with all my devices plugged in with the car on and off... I don't use any 12V devices so I think I am also going to bypass the LDO on the ITPS and make it un regulated because the PW70A and M10000 MB can handle around 16V, which is more than my batter puts out.. This will help me get more power out of my PW70A...

    I am also have a PW120 from Ituner on the way to test out and hopefully the combo of all this will fix me up.

    You say the video is killed instantly, so you don't get to watch the shutdown? There may be a check box popping up in windows that says something stupid when the hard drive is connected. If so it's waiting for you to click on "OK" but you can't see it, then it gets shut off after 45 seconds. If it's not a hassle with your setup, I'd attach an externally powered monitor and watch the system shut down when you shut off the car.

    When I say the screen is cut off instanstly I meant it looses its VGA signal instanstly... The monitor is powered constantly so I can watch the shutdown process, but as soon as you kill power it loses a video signal.. It has gotten a lot better now that I ran a higher gauge wire direct to the battery.. Now with everything plugged up it hibernates most of the time.. Sometimes it loses power right before it is done hibernating, but I am going to bypass the LDO on my ITPS and hopefully this will fix that..

    whoa this sounds weird.

    Best bet is to get a power supply with a shutdown timer built in so that you dont need to use the ITPS.

    IF things change when you run a better power connection, then your problem almost surely is due to power.

    What is powering your USB HDD? Most have a second usb power cable, which gives the drive a 5V power source. maybe look into getting one of the carnetix 5v power adapters.
