    Not grounding tank battery?

Alright, I'm planning on putting a second tank battery in my trunk to power my amplifiers and carputer only. Now I'm no electrician, but I was thinking, if the second battery is not grounded, but wired directly to all my devices, then I wouldn't need a diode.

This may be completely wrong, so feel free to flame: If the second battery can not provide its negative energy to the starter, then the positive energy can not be provided by the second battery aswell.

You would not be able to charge it off the alternator if there is not common ground connection between the main battery and the tank circuit battery. If you plan on charging the battery off mains electricity whenever you have your car in the garage then your plan should work. Also, if you do not connect the grounds together there is no point in connectiong the +ve lines either.
