Need to power 200w PS without inverter

Here is the pc I plan on using in the car.

    http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...model=MEGA_651

I am trying to find a way to get power to the pc without using an intervter. Would the ITPS work? If so, how would I connect everything? I'm guessing it would go from a 12v source in the car, such as a cigarette lighter and then the output would go to the PS somehow.

The power supply in this PC is for mains electricity. You could use an inverter, but it sounds like you don't want to. Don't blame you, running on DC is more efficient.

You need to replace the AC-DC power supply in the case with a good DC-DC power supply. I recommend getting the Opus 150W supply and if this case is compatible there is a version of the Opus supply to fit in shuttle type cases. The Opus DC-DC power supply has three connections:

    1) ground, connect to a GOOD ground close to the case, or back to the battery negative.

    2) power, connect directly to the battery + with a fuse close to the battery. Use a thick wire guage.

    3) ignition. You could use your 'cigarette lighter' here is it is only on when the ignition is on. this is used to signal to the power supply when to turn the PC on/off.

Theres lots of info here, do a

    Philip.

hey Pip, thnx for the reply. I had noticed the Opus 150W and considered it as a solution. Only issue I saw was that its rated at 150W, and the one in that case is currently a 200W. Will I still have enough power to support all the stuff that is built into that computer?

    update:

I just came across this link in the forums.

If I bought this, would I need anything else or would I just run the appropriate cables to the ps and power up?

That power supply will work, but it won't provide any startup or shutdown features like an OPUS or ITPS. You could always do that yourself with some sort of timer circuit and some relays.

This brings me back to an earlier concern....will the OPUS be enough for that MSI computer? If so, I'm all down for buying the OPUS. I only spotted that other PS because of the 200W rating.
